Would you go against your families wishes and the Community beliefs?
Or would you go against your own dreams and desires to make your family proud?
'It's not a place for a lady'
'Are you sure you want to do that with your life?'
'Women your age are child bearing and married'
'A lady shouldn't be behind a gurney but should belong behind a stove'
These are all words Mary-Rose had to face, she didn't come from a Governors household like Elizabeth Wilson, no, her father was a coal minor and her mother was a maid, Mary-Rose Budell never had the opportunity to become anything more than a personal servant nor a pick pocket until she was fifteen and on the run, she signed her name under the navy—illegally of course since it was frowned upon for such an act for a woman to speak against being a nurse rather than a soldier or doctor. So, she tucked her hair in, wore pantsuits and against everything her mother said, she became the thing her family forbade and made her own story.
She believed that women had the same right and privilege to do just as the men, although it seemed the other opinionated people on the town had a lot to say about that statement.
It wasn't uncommon for a woman to take a stand against her family, but it was expected for her to be straightened out through unlawful punishments by their parents or rather to be shipped away to a boarding school for seven years like some object to be wedded by a man and used to make their meals and home clean.
Mary-Rose had always dreamed of something more, something behind the curtain of sexism and being a woman. Something along the lines of saving the lives that no one else would batt an eye for, to give the world to someone who hadn't touched the stars and moon, to give them a chance to walk again even if they themselves no longer believed.
She wanted to do some good, to pay for what she did as a rebellious teen who had to provide for her family.
Nobody believed in her, and that was fine. In her opinion she didn't need them to, she believed enough for herself and that's what mattered. She is determined to prove others wrong and although she hates it, she's also willing to prove herself wrong and fail to shine the light on her siblings so they can live the life she never got to. The life she dreamed of.
And that's her story.
Women. Interesting species, so different yet so unique to the history of the world, they pave the way for future women to come.
Women almost always seemed to be underestimated whenever you refer to the early days, the thought of a woman wearing a gown and a white dress was ideal until they had dreams themselves, dreams outside child baring and working behind the kitchen stove.
This story starts with one rebellious teen meeting another, instant love forms but isn't acted upon until many years later when it may be too late. This story is about a woman with desires bigger than herself and as she explores the wonders of the world, she finds herself a little more vulnerable to the unknown pressures and challenges of her future. To believe it's rather woeful to say she was the only one to believe in herself would be an overstatement, sometimes she nought to believe herself either.
