Splashflight's Mistake (book one)

Chapter 19

Fishkit took a paw of her father. Her white pelt shone next to him. She was identical to his sparkling fur. She lifted his red paw and hoisted it up on her shoulder. Heronkit did the same. His silver pelt sparkled in the starlight. Venomrain lifted his torso and wriggled underneath, while Splashpaw took the shoulders.

They continued in a sad possession down the slope towards the cliff that looked out over the lake. Splashpaw set his old mentors body down, and bowed his head. Venomrain and the kits moved to give Splashpaw room to begin digging the grave. But Splashpaw first inspected his fur. He saw no marks on his neck that could be fatal. No one knew how he died...

Splashpaw looked in between his claws, and gasped when he pulled a strand of fur from it. He sniffed. The scent was too stale. He checked his neck again, looking more closely. This time he saw an indent in his neck fur. It was concealed with white pollen. He growled.

"Splashpaw? What are you doing?" Venomrain ventured. Splashpaw turned solemnly to her.

"I know how he died, Venomrain. He was murdered."

They walked into camp just as Nightgaze was calling the clan meeting. The mourning cats looked up expectantly to him, knowing how ill Aquastar was.

"Aquastar has made her choice. I say these words over the spirit of Redstrike, so he may hear and approve of my choice."

Nightgaze paused. Who would it be? Splashpaw settled himself beside Brightshine, wrapping his tail around her thighs subtlety. No one would notice. They were all too intent on learning the new deputy. Brightshine wrapped hers around him in turn.

"I wonder who it's gonna be?" Brightshine leaned over to whisper to Splashpaw.

Splashpaw swept his gaze over the clan. "Probably Snowtip. She's a great cat..."

Just as he spoke, Nightgaze continued. "Morningshine will be the new deputy of DewClan."
