A cat, belly heavy and exposed with kits stepped out of the shadows, heaving herself away from the fox, who was growling and spitting, as if desperate for its next leaf-bare meal. She let out a groan as she collapsed in a sheltered bush, bleeding heavily from scratches and wounds. It was obvious she had been attacked, and was near death to say the least. A big slit in her belly shifted long after she breathed her last breath, and two tiny, mewling she-kits tumbled out of the wound, barely breathing. They had miraculously broken their own birthing sacs, and somehow found their way out into the open world through the large hole in their mothers belly.

A cat padded through the open hedge, nearly tripping over the body of the dead mother. "Oh my!" She exclaimed, and looked at the two kits. She looked to the sky, her eyes cast towards the last wispy pink strands of dawn that were just disappearing with the twinkling starry night. It was almost as if the she cat were looking for guidance. After a moment, she looked back down at the kits.

"She looks just like Dawnkit..." The she cat whispered, and, as if she suddenly felt the guidance she was seeking, picked up the two kits and trotted off. "I'm going to take care of you, Dawnkit and Morningkit," she said gently through their scruffs. The touching scene was enough to warm the hearts of anyone, the two mewling kits being given a chance at new life, being given a new mother, a family.

They padded through the woods, and she suddenly stopped. There was a flaming star, falling in the lightening morning sky. She watched in awe, as it fell, and stormy clouds covered the otherwise perfect sky. The star fell, and set the forest ablaze before her, while the pond animals near her started splashing violently. She looked around in panic, seeing a lemur giving a screeching warning call and running to the edge of the pool.

To her astonishment, a strange calico turtle stood by the side of the lemur, and together they splashed in the pond, whooping and screeching until, miraculously, the fire went out. The cat gasped as a low voice sounded.

"The ringed tail and the dappled turtle will join forces to deliver us from the morning star," it said, and then the blaze vanished.

The whole scene lasted no more than a heartbeat, but it was enough to frighten the she cat. She set the two kits down, and looked them in the eye.

"Who are you?" She whispered, nearly silently, her tailtip flicking ever so gently. She glanced around, putting the two kits on her back, and padding back over to their mother. She touched her nose to the mother's flank briefly, and murmured something softly, before she covered the still bleeding body with leaves and turned around.

"Let's take you home," she told the two kittens, trotting back towards the way she had come.

"Let's take you home."
