"Yeah... I'm not going to leave you here alone." He scrunches his face slightly.
"Well... I have been here alone so far and I have been alright." I flash a small smile.
"Ah... I live like two hours away. So... Yeah... Not a good idea to be here in the dark by yourself."
"And my car?"
"Uhm... We can only hope it's still here... Why did you take this road anyway?" He starts walking to my trunk.
"I actually took the wrong turn off but then it said I can go straight and will get back on the right path.""Hm." He pops the trunk open and gathers my luggage.
"What are you doing?" I walk towards him.
"Do you want your things to be stolen?" He places my bags on the dirt and closes the trunk."Oh... Is it really that bad here?"
"Hm-mm." He lifts all my bags up and starts walking towards his truck. This is seriously not good vibes...
What... You know him... I think the stuff out here will be far worse."Hey! Wait up!" I scurry after him. He effortlessly picks up each bag and places them on the back of the pickup truck.
"So why were you driving down this road if it's so bad?" I get in the passenger side.
"I trim the trees and stuff along the road now and then." He closes the door, walks over to the driver's side, and gets it.
"Thanks by the way." I pull the safety belt and click it in place.
"Sure... What would be the odds that we run into each other on a deserted road of all places." He smiles and copies me."Yeah! It's insane! Just glad it's someone I know and not some weirdo!" I smile and make myself comfortable.
"Yeah! That would suck." We start moving.
"So Kev... What have you been up to all these years?"
"I've been around. Doing small odd jobs for the town here.""Oh... Thats cool... Like a contractor?"
"Yeah... Something like that.""So why were you on that road? Aren't you a bit far from home?" He looks at me quickly and back at the road.
"I just decided screw it and I got all my savings together and decided to go on a cross-country journey."
"Bold move... What made you decide this?""Had a client scream at me in front of everyone. Because she expected me to be a robot and finish her website in an impossible timeframe. But that wasn't the thing that pushed me. What pushed me was my boss agreeing with her and calling me lazy... Me lazy!?" I scoff.
"Ouch... I am sorry... So you just quit?"
"No... I just told them where to shove it and then threatened to leave. But he quickly apologized because he knew I was good at my job. And that is how I got a month-long paid leave." I smile."Oh damn! Well done for standing up for yourself!" He returns the smile.
"And family?"
"Um... Mom is around busy with her own things... Abby is married and expecting their first.""Oh wow! Congrats on becoming an aunt!"
"Thank you. And you, how's the fam?""They are well. Retired so keeping busy at home."
"Oh, do they live with you?""No. They are the farm next to mine." He picks up a bottle of water and holds it out toward me.
"Thank you. A farm? You live on a farm?"
He nods and takes another bottle of water from the middle console."That is cool!" I take a sip while looking at the scenery driving past us. A large field with huge trees in the distance.
"Looks like a massive storm is rolling in." He fiddles with the windscreen wipers. I look in front of me and see the raindrops start painting the window.
"Ah no..."
"And now?" He looks at me with a confused expression."Not a fan of storms..." I press my lips together and hold onto the seatbelt.
"If it makes you feel any better. I am right here." He takes a sip and returns the bottle of water."Thanks..."
You need to keep your distance from this one Tarah! He is a dangerous man! Yes... A dangerously attractive man... How did he become this freaking good-looking!?
"Tarah?"
"Oh sorry, did you say something?""Yeah, did you hear about that girl that went missing?"
"No? When was this?" I fold my left leg under my other leg."She was traveling on the same road I found you."
"What!?" I feel a cold feeling surface inside me."Hm-mm... Found her car abandoned and no sign of her."
"Oh my goodness... When was this?""Can't remember, but they never found her. And I don't think they ever will."
I look at Kevin and see a line form on his forehead as he holds onto the steering wheel.
"Why do you say that?"
"It's a small town. And people tend to overlook at or anything that happens in it." He slowly turns the steering wheel to the right and start driving over a small bridge that leads onto a dirt road. I look at the river busy licking the edge of the bridge. I look up and see nothing but an open field on either side of the dirt road and a few trees scattered."How much further?" I ask feeling uncomfortable seeing him switch the headlights on.
"About another thrity minutes or so." He picks the water up and takes a sip."Maybe you should make the wipers go faster?"
"Yeah, looks like its coming down full blast now. Hey, listen... I think you should stay the night. Normally when it rains like this that bridge by the turn off floods.""I saw the water was basically as high as the bridge... But can't we come check?"
"And take such a big risk? What is the rush?""No rush. Just don't want to overstay my welcome."
