Chapter 5: Saving Grace
After Jade utterly destroyed the mouth, she joined Uzi, N, and Gemmy over at the center of this cave.
"Wow, that was so cool, Gemmy! You demolished that thing!" Said N, his smile broad.
"T-thanks. It wasn't much."
N punched his shoulder. "Are you kidding me? That was, like, the coolest thing I've ever seen!"
Gemmy gave him a faint smile.
Jade grinned.
"That was pretty cool, good job, wuss."
Gemmy rolled his eyes.
Then he noticed Uzi.
She was sitting in a corner, tears welling up in her eyes.
Well, that was rare.
N tried to go, but Jade stopped him. She mouthed at Gemmy, 'railgun' and motioned him to go.
Gemmy gulped and approached a sad Uzi.
"..Hey."
"What do you want?"
"..Um.. Sorry about your railgun."
"OF COURSE YOU'RE SORRY! YOU SHOULD BE SORRY!" lashed Uzi.
Gemmy flinched. He didn't like this side of Uzi, but he wanted to find out why she was like this.
"Can-can I ask you why you like that railgun so much?" asked Gemmy.
Uzi flinched as well, like it was a sensitive subject. Then she muttered, "Because it was my dad's."
Gemmy's expression softened, realizing why Jade loved that railgun so much.
"Oh. I didn't know."
"Well, now you do." Said Uzi in a monotone voice.
Gemmy realized he hadn't been with his parents for a few days now, and his stomach churned.
"W-was he a nice man?"
"Well, yeah, he was the coolest. He taught me how to use the railgun."
Uzi stopped suddenly, as if this was a sensitive topic for her.
"A-and then he died."
Gemmy's heart skipped a beat.
"It was a car crash, or that's what my mom told me."
Gemmy put his hand on her shoulder.
Uzi brushed it off.
"Whatever. I don't need your sympathy."
Gemmy gave her a sideways smile.
"Well, we can try to rebuild your 'baby', right?"
He picked up a small piece of the railgun.
Uzi took it and looked away.
"Thanks, I guess." Said Uzi, giving him her trademark smirk.
Gemmy nervously gave her some finger guns.
Uzi laughed quietly and stood up. She offered her hand to Gemmy.
Gemmy took it, and stood up.
Gemmy noticed N glaring at him with jealousy.
He sheepishly shrugged.
They walked back to the rest of the group, who were testing out Jade's machete.
N, who was apparently the target, had scratches all over him, and was grumbling about how he 'never got an anime moment.'
Soon, they got back to the battered ship, and they started to repair it.
Jade started looking at the condition of the ship/submarine, and by the look of her expression, it wasn't very good.
"It's half broken. I think we're stuck."
"Dang it."
Uzi rolled her eyes. "Well, if it makes you feel better, we COULD set up base in this large cave with fish, warm shelter, plenty of hiding spots and potential adventures. Just a suggestion."
Jade rolled her eyes as well. It was kind of a thing. "Fine."
So after a few hours of hard work, they had moved all their things, (which were all soggy)
dried them by a fire, set up camp and a small fishing spot, and finally got some well deserved rest.
"I'm SO tired." Said N, rummaging through a pile of stuff.
"Well, pull up a sleeping bag like the rest of us. What do you want, a king size bed?"
"Well, it would be preferred." N murmured.
"Well, I would prefer to be in the Disneyland Hotel. Deal with it."
"What's Disney?" Asked Jade.
While Jade explained the wonders of 2020's television, Gemmy pulled out a small Tomodatchi.
It was an old toy that his Bāchan had given him. Well, two of them.
He had given the other one to his best friend, Akari.
He missed her.
Last time they'd seen each other was a day before the flood struck.
Gemmy clutched the Tomodachi.
A single tear rolled down his cheek.
Jade rolled over to him, in her sleeping bag.
"You good, small guy?"
Gemmy couldn't respond. For the first time in days he had the time to actually think about his family and his friends.
Especially Akari.
From the pile of wet stuff, there was a pile of paper that had survived the water by staying inside of the plastic wrap.
He pulled out the paper and a pencil that he always kept in his shoe for emergency situations.
He sketched Akari.
"Hey, who's that?" Said Jade as she pulled up to Gemmy.
"One of my friends." He murmured.
"A special friend?" Said Jade in a teasing tone.
Gemmy blushed.
"Heh, I'll leave you to it."
Soon, Gemmy grinned.
He had made a very nice doodle of Akari.
N peered over his shoulder.
"Who dat?" He asked.
"Just a friend." I said, smiling.
"What's a friend?"
Gemmy looked at him, surprised.
"Oh. It's nothing." Said N, going back to his sleeping bag.
Gemmy stared at him as he went to bed.
Wow, these kids were messed up.
