Aaron's POV continued
-
Leila, my daughter lays back on the examination table. I ask her, "Can you lift your shirt up, love?" She does but she keeps her hands in front of her stomach. I say, patient with her as I can be, "Leila, love, I have to see your stomach. You have to move your hands for a second, sweetheart." She slowly puts her hands to her sides. I explain to her, "I'm going to press on your stomach in different places tell me if it hurts alright. She says, fear in her eyes, "Will it hurt?" I reply, "It depends, Leil. It shouldn't though but if it does then I'll figure out why." I press on her stomach a few times but when I get to the lower part of her stomach she cries out loud, "Ow!" I stop immediately. I say, "Okay, love. I won't touch it no more. You can sit up. She does. I sit in front of be. I explain to her, "Okay, love. I know this won't be the news you want to hear but I have to tell you. I'm not one hundred percent what's wrong with your stomach but I'm pretty sure you are about to start what is called your period soon. You see you recently turned 12 and when girls turn 12 they are growing so they have to get a checkup. Well unfortunately, love you are due for one. So I'm going to do your checkup really quickly. But I need you to cooperate with me so we can get done faster, okay? I know you are scared and confused but I promise I love you and want to care for you." My daughter whines, "I don't want a checkup." I say, "You have to baby, I'm sorry." Leila sighs in defeat. Then my daughter asks, "What's a period?" I tell her I'll explain it to her. I tell her what a period is. She replies, "That sounds weird." I laugh a little, "It's normal, baby. Ask your mother she has one too. But I understand a lot of girls think it's weird when they first hear about it." Leila giggles a little for a moment too but then gets scared, "What do you have to do for the checkup?" I say, "Well, for starters, I need to check your vitals and then I need to look for signs of puberty. She scrunches her nose, "That sounds like it will hurt." I say, "It won't, love. You know what vitals are and the other thing doesn't hurt either. I promise." She says okay. I smile at her. I say, "Okay. First, I'm going to check your temperature." She shakes her head. I grab the thermometer and hold it above her head. It beeps and says 98.9. I say, "No fever, love." I ask her,"Okay next I usually check your weight but since your stomach hurts I'll skip that for now." She says thank you dad. I say you're welcome. I explain, rolling the cart over to the examination table, "However, I need to check your blood pressure." Leila says, whining,"No please daddy I remember that it makes my arm feel tight I don't like it." I answer, "I'm sorry, Leil. Unfortunately it's part of the checkup." I gently grab her arm and start to roll up her sleeves, causing her to spiral into tears. I say, "Leila. The sooner you cooperate the sooner I can be done baby. I know you don't like it." My 12 year old still cries in front of me. I tell her, "I tell you what. I will let you check my blood pressure first if you want." She says, "Okay." I show her how to do it and she rolls my sleeve up for me and does. She says, "Be still dad." I laugh, "I am sweetheart." When it's done I help her take it off of me then I do hers. Her arm isn't relaxed so I tell her to keep it still. She does what I say. I take hers off too. I check it off my list. I say, "Now, I'm going to check your hearing and your throat." I check my daughters hearing first. Then it's time for the throat. I say, "Open your mouth please Leil." She doesn't. I say, "Say ahh." Leila doesn't. I give her a well known father look, "Leil." She sighs and opens her mouth a little. I say, "A little wider love." She does and I look at her throat. It's normal. I say, "Now I am going to check for signs of puberty, okay baby?" I ask her, "Can you lay down again for me, baby?" She says, "I don't want to." I say, "I'm sorry Leil. But I need to figure out why your stomach is hurting you." She sighs laying down on her back. I say, "Thank you, love. Now I'm going to pull down your pants for just a second." Leila moves away at hearing this, I gently pull her back in a lying position, "It's okay, baby. I'm your dad. I will never hurt you intentionally. You trust me huh?" Leila nods,"Y-yeah." I gently pull down her pants and look at her private and pull them back up. I explain to her, "Okay, love. I was correct. You are going to start your period soon. The stomach pain is completely normal it's called period cramps but I can give you medicine for that when it hurts. You just got to tell me next time ok?" My daughter nods understandingly. I say, "Now I'm going to listen to your heart mkay?" Leila nods again. I take my stethoscope and she already knows what to do. She moves up her shirt so I can check it. I praise, "I'm proud of you love." I place the cold metal to her chest. She takes a few deep breaths in different place then I take out the earpieces and say, "Good job sweetheart." Now I take a deep breath. I announce, slowly, not ready for her reaction, " Okay, Leila. We've done most of everything there is to the checkup but there's still one more thing my beautiful love." Leila says, now scared, "Wh-what is it?"
I answer, "I'm not going to lie to you love. It's a few shots. Please don't be afraid or mad." Leila starts to cry, "You didn't tell me that, Daddy. I h-hate s-shots. You hid that fro-om m-m-e." I look at her with a look of desperation and my heart is crushed, "Oh, love. I don't mean to hide it from you. But you know as well as I do if I told you before you would never let me do the checkup." She yells at me, sniffing, "I want mom." I reply, "Don't yell please sweetheart. Your mom is sleeping. Don't make this harder than it has to b-" Suddenly my wife comes in the room Leila immediately runs to her explaining the situation to her. I run a hand through my hair. Juliette surprises me saying, "Leila Warner. You need to stop giving your father a hard time. I know you are scared. He knows you are scared. But you can't run from this. You need to first apologize for yelling at your father. Secondly, he loves you more than you realize. You don't hate this more than he hates doing it to you. You know how many times he's told me he hates being the bad guy and how difficult it is for him, baby? Now please calm down. I'll sit with you if you want but please." Leila tries to calm herself and it works for a second but then she starts breathing really heavy. I immediately run to her and kneel beside her, "Hey, hey. Leila. Breathe baby. Breathe. You'll give yourself a panic attack. Just breathe." She rasps between breaths, "I'm. Sorry.. dad.." I hush her, "It's okay, sweetheart. You're just scared. Now I'm going to put you on the table okay? Your mom will be right beside you okay?" Leila nods through her falling tears. After I place her on the table, I tuck a piece of her hair, "You're okay." Juliette looks at me. I look back at her. I say to our daughter, "Now, love, I need you to lay down on your stomach please." Leila squirms, "I'm- scared." "I know love" My daughter says, "Why on my stomach." I sigh, "Because this shot is a heavy dose and it needs to be in your bottom." She cries harder, "Why not my leg. Mom tell him please." My wife looks at her with sympathy, "He can't baby. This one shot has to go on your butt because it's a heavy dose." I kiss Leila's cheek, "If it wasn't a heavy dose love i would do it in your leg or arm I promise you." Leila sighs, still crying, "Oh. Okay. C-can we do that one last please daddy." I sigh, "Yes, sweetheart. We can do that one last. Sit up for me." Leila sits up willingly. I pull the cart over and take off the top of the shot. Leila looks at it with fear. I say, placing the shot back down, "Don't look at the shot. Look at me, love. Look at me. This one is just a little pinch. Trust me love." Leila looks at me. I roll her sleeve and rub her arm with rubbing alcohol. Her arm is tense. I say, "Just the wipe love not the shot just yet." She says okay. I say on three. Keep looking at me." One two three. I press the shot into her arm. When I am done I take it out and dispose of it. Juliette and I praise our daughter, "Good job, baby. We're proud of you."I hurry and do the other arm. Then lastly is the one she wanted last. I declare to her, "It's time for the last one, angel. I need to you turn around on your stomach and lay down." She flips over but cries. Juliette says, "It's okay, Leila. You'll be done before you know it." I ask her, "Can you pull your pants down for me baby?" She says no. Juliette gives her a stern look. I say, "It's okay. I'll do it for her." I pull down her pants gently down to the back of her knees. I prepare the shot. I wipe the antiseptic against her bottom. She squirms. I say, "You're doing amazing love. One pinch." I press the shot into the skin. She cries and cries. I say almost done. I take it out and place a bandage over the shot place. I pull her pants back up. She cries more. Leila says, "It stings daddy." I furrow my eyebrows in pity, "I know baby I know. Come here, love." I wrap my arms around her. She holds onto my waist. Juliette wraps her arms around me. It's a whole big group of a hugging family. I say, "I love you Leila. I'm sorry you had to get shots. I know how scared you are. The good news is you don't have to have any more for a very long time." Leila asks, "I don't ?" I smile, "Nope. Not for a while." I look at my wife, "In fact your mom will get hers sooner than you'll get yours." My wife scowls at me," What's that supposed to mean, Aaron." I say, "You are due for a checkup yourself, my beautiful wife." Leila laughs. My wife says, "Nuh uh." I say, smiling , "Uh huh." I say, "However Leila I need to give you some medicine for your stomach. Here drink this." I give her a liquid medicine. She swallows it. I tell my wife, "I can go ahead and do yours today Juliette since both our schedules are free." Juliette replies nervously, "You don't have to do that, Aaron." I reply, "I insist." Juliette gulps but says back, "Okay. When?" I say, "I can do it now. You can come sit in this chair though you won't fit in the exam table. That's mainly for kids." She follows me over to the chair.Continued in part three
