The road back through the Wild Area did not feel empty after the Ground-type job. Sand still scratched at my jacket, and the weight of Max Quake lingered in my thoughts like an echo under my shoes. Galarian Yamask floated beside Alice instead of resting inside its Poké Ball, the cracked tablet on its tail hanging lower than usual.
We had battled through a harsh stretch of Wild Area ground earlier that morning, when a pack of wild Pokémon had startled near the edge of Dusty Bowl. Yamask had taken the hardest hit without fainting. Afterward, it had refused to look weak, but every slow drift toward the old stone arch made me watch it more carefully.
Alice noticed too. "Yamask keeps turning toward that arch."
The stone arch rose ahead of us, half-buried in weathered earth and old sand. It did not look like a stadium gate or a human road marker. It looked older, lonelier, and patient in a way that reminded me of ruins waiting for someone to ask the right question.
Pikachu shifted on my shoulder, ears dipping toward Yamask, "That tablet is not only heavy. It is being called."
"I know," I murmured. "We stay close, but we do not pull it back unless it asks."
Gloria tightened her scarf as another gust swept over the bowl. "Is this normal for Yamask?"
"Not normal," Elena said, steadying Feebas's tank against her side. "But not every change is a trap. Some changes are old doors."
Yamask drifted from Alice's side before either of us called. Its body trembled, and the tablet scraped low enough to draw a thin line through the sand. The line did not vanish in the wind. It darkened, spreading in branching marks beneath the arch.
"Yamask?" I stepped forward, keeping my voice calm. "What is the matter?"
Yamask turned its mask toward me. The tablet lifted, cracked edges glowing with dull gray light, "The stone remembers the pain I carried through the storm."
Alice reached for my sleeve. "Ash, the markings are moving."
The sandstorm rose all at once. It did not roll across the land like weather. It circled the arch like something had drawn a boundary around Yamask and the ancient stone. Sand struck the outside of my goggles, and Pikachu braced against my shoulder.
I reached for Yamask, but Galarian Stunfisk snapped flat in front of my boot, stopping me before I crossed the new seal. The ground inside the ring glowed with symbols that spread from Yamask's tablet to the buried stone beneath the arch.
Elena's voice cut through the wind. "Something stone-like is forming around it!"
"It is not attacking," Alice said, though fear tightened her words. "It is changing."
The tablet broke apart first. Pieces lifted like fragments of an ancient painting, circling Yamask as the mask vanished into the storm. For one breath, I thought of the mural at Stow-on-Side breaking open to reveal a hidden truth. This was different. This was not a false picture falling away. This was a spirit becoming the picture completely.
Then, as suddenly as it had risen, the sand dropped.
A great stone figure hovered beneath the arch, its body formed from cracked slabs, painted lines, and a spirit's dark core. Red markings ran across it like an ancient seal. It turned slowly, and the eyes in the mural opened with Yamask's familiar presence behind them.
"Yamask?" I asked softly, careful not to step across the fading seal.
The new Pokémon lowered part of its body toward me, the heavy stones moving with solemn care, "I am still the sorrow you carried, but now I can carry myself."
