The last stretch of the climb stole the warmth from my legs, but the sight at the top gave it back in a different way. Crown Shrine rose from the mountain like an old memory that refused to collapse.
Stone walls circled the shrine, weathered by snow and time. Beyond them stood a hall that looked almost like a castle, with broken edges, old pillars, and a quiet dignity that made every footstep feel too loud.
"So this is Crown Shrine," I said.
Alice looked up at the roofline, breath turning white. "It looks amazing. Ancient, but not dead."
Elena held the Reins of Unity close under her coat, protecting them from wind and snow. "If the steeds chose this place, then they did not forget everything."
Pikachu leaned forward from my shoulder, ears lifting toward the entrance, "This is where pride comes when it misses home but will not admit it."
"That sounds like them," I murmured.
Inside, the shrine opened into a worn hall with a stable area built beside it. Two feeding bowls sat near old stalls, each polished by use despite the age around them. One bowl was chipped. The other had ice scratches along its rim.
"Glastrier and Spectrier have been here," Alice said.
Elena wrote quickly. "Horse barn present. Two feeding bowls. Shrine likely functioning as current den for both steeds."
A gust moved through the hall, and the two Calyrex emerged from the shadows of their old home. The king hovered with his crown dim but steady. The queen's gaze passed over the stalls with a grief she kept carefully contained.
"We have been waiting for you, human children," the king said.
"The Crown Shrine was once our home," the queen added. "Now our steeds must view us as helpless, having lost our powers, and mock us by making this place their own sanctuary."
"It may not only be mockery," I said.
The queen looked at me.
"If they returned here," I continued, "maybe some part of them still remembers where they belonged."
For a moment, neither Calyrex answered. Then the king's eyes moved to the Reins of Unity in Elena's hands.
"You have indeed brought them," he said softly. "You have our gratitude."
Elena handed the reins over with both hands. The king and queen accepted them as if taking back pieces of themselves, and the faint glow in the woven mane and petal made the old hall feel warmer.
The queen brushed one rein with her fingers. "The colors, the gleam, the shape of the binding. How many dawns have passed since I last held this?"
"Too many," the king said.
Alice watched the stalls. "Will the reins be enough?"
"Glastrier and Spectrier are proud Pokémon," the king said. "Some would call them arrogant. They will not accept us as their riders again unless we prove our power surpasses their own."
"The reins allow us to send our power directly through the bond," the queen explained. "If they still remember even a fragment of loyalty, the bond may awaken."
"And if they do not?" Elena asked.
The queen's eyes hardened with sorrow. "Then we must learn whether our old home has become only a battlefield."
The king turned toward the bowls. "Place the Iceroot and Shaderoot Carrots where our steeds rest. Then hide yourselves. They will not approach if they sense a threat waiting openly."
