The Lake

After school I met Grace and Skylar by the big tree they told me to meet them at. We had to walk but it was fine because the pizza place was nearby anyways. As we left the school I noticed Cole's car speeding out the school gates. "Woah that was fast" I say "Yeah,Cole waits for nobody hes always the first one out of the school" Grace says "All the cheerleaders try get out of class early just to watch him drive away with his window down and his hair blowing in the wind..its kind of creepy actually" Skylar adds. I don't blame them I thought. We entered the pizza place and I only got a diet coke. "Is that all your getting? You didn't have lunch" Grace expresses. "Yeah im just not hungry" I said. She changed the topic "So..Have you ever seen Cole shirtless" she smirks "Grace you cant ask that" Skylar laughs and so do I. "What? You're living with Cole and your telling me you haven't thought about him shirtless?" she says. "Well..I dont know" i say. "Ah ha so you have" Grace says and I laugh. "So why does Cole have such a fuck boy reputation" I just had to ask because he seems nice at home. "Because he is" Skylar said. "Yeah he basically hooked up with half the town" Grace adds "Oh right I see" I changed the conversation fast. Maybe it wasn't worth liking Cole. Expect disappointment and you wont be disappointed. We chat for a while about the town and we make plans for the weekend. It started to get late and Skylar and Grace walked home. I stayed behind awhile as I don't think i'd get much homework done at the Walters. It was dark outside when I realised I didn't know my way home and when I rang Katherine she didn't answer neither did George. I had nobody's phone numbers so I rang the house phone. "Hello" I said with relief when someone answered  "Who is this?" the person on the phone replied but I couldn't make out who it was. "It's Elsie" i said. "Oh right, it's Cole whats up?" he asks "Im outside the pizza place and I have no idea how to get home,can you pick me up?" It's almost 10pm and its freezing outside at night time. "Yeah of course just give me a few minutes" he says "just wait there" and he then hangs up. It's been 45 minutes and Cole still didn't show up I was about to ask random people where the Walters house is because it's a small town so everyone knows everyone. I seen a car speeding my direction and I knew it was Cole. I hop in the passenger seat "Hey" he says as if he didn't have me waiting that long. I didnt reply. "Hello?" Cole taps me on the shoulder "answer". I looked at him "Why did you have me waiting that long you said you would only be 10 minutes and it's been almost an hour" I ranted. "Jeez relax I just had something to do" he scoffed. "You mean you had someone to do" I whispered as I put on my seatbelt but he heard me. "I come here to collect you and you assume I took so long because I was hooking up with someone?" he said sternly "Well thats sort of your reputation isnt it? i mean even the 'Cole effect' " I mention. "Right so you're just going to believe everything people tell you?" "If you had to know I was late because I was at physiotherapy for my leg" I looked at him. I felt bad for what I said. "Oh what happened?"  I asked calmly  "Football game last year it was a bad tackle and i've been getting treatment done since". We were still parked at the side of the road outside the pizza place. "Im sorry for what I said I shouldn't have said that" I say. I felt really bad I could tell football meant alot to him."Its okay dont worry about it and also if you ever want to talk to me about anything in here" he says and i smile "same goes".He switches on the ignition and starts to drive.

I notice we are going the complete opposite way from the walters house. "Cole" i say "Where are we going?". "I want to show you somewhere" he says "but its getting late" i look at the clock on the car dashboard 23:03 "will Katherine and George not be mad we're out so late?" "nah" he replies "don't worry we'll only be awhile" We pull up to a lake and we hop out of the car. "Where's this" I ask looking around "Its where i come to think" Cole says as we sit down on a rock over looking the lake. It really was beautiful. The moon was shining down on the lake and you could hear the sounds of the trees blowing in the wind. I shiver as a gust of wind blows."Here" Cole takes off his jacket and wraps it around me "take this" he smiled. "Wont you be cold?" I asked concerned "I'll be okay aslong as you are" he said and looked over the lake. We sat in silence for a few minutes taking it all in. "Do you show many people this" I ask "what, like girls?" he says looking at me."No, just in general do you bring anyone here" I say, but I really did mean girls. I didn't want to be another one of Coles one offs."Nah you're the first person I ever brought here" he says "Why me?" I say looking at him. "I don't know, I know i've only known you for the past 2 days but-" he paused, "you're special Els" "what do you mean?" my heart is racing what does he mean im special? "its nothing nevermind". he says and my heart drops. He jumps up "we should get going it's almost midnight" he turns and walks towards to car. I didn't ask any questions I just followed him. The rest of the car ride was silent. It was 23:58 when we pulled into the ranch. Cole unlocked the front door without saying anything. Alex walked out of the living room seeing us together and his face dropped then I realised I was still wearing Cole's jacket and quickly took it off. Katherine poked her head out of the kitchen and told us off for being home so late and not telling anyone where we were. She grounded Cole but I think she felt pity for me and let me off with a warning. I hate when people use my family's death as an excuse to baby me. I wish people would treat me equal to everyone else. I think that's why I don't tell alot of people. But I didn't mention it.

I got into my pajamas,brushed my teeth,washed my face and got into bed. I layed down staring at the ceiling thinking about today. Alex did a sweet thing for me today which made me like him even more but what Cole said really has me thinking.'You're special Els' what does that mean? Danny said he flirts with everyone so Im trying not to take it to heart but what made it personal was the nickname Els. I suddenly hear a knock on my door- it was Cole- "Hey can I come in?" he whispers trying to keep quiet so Katherine and George dont hear "Yeah sure" I say and he shuts the door behind him. He sits down on my bed next to me. "Im sorry Els I really am" again 'Els'. "What are you a apologising for?" I knew but I wanted an explanation. "Im sorry for not explaining what I meant at the lake I could tell in the car it was bothering you but I didn't want to say anything" I listen. "I just meant it in a platonic way". My heart drops to my stomach. "Oh thats fine I totally feel the same way" I said. I didn't feel that way at all. "Oh- Okay great so we're on the same page?" he asks with some dissatisfaction in his voice "yeah we are" I say sternly. He gets up and leaves but I can hear him lingering outside my door for a few seconds before going back to his room. Maybe everyone was right maybe he is a player. I wasn't going to feed his ego. But i just can't leave him go.
