chapter three !
ALAYNE, 126 AC
That night, Alayne had slept restlessly. For hours on end, she tossed and turned under the sheets, unable to calm her mind. Her dreams were plagued with the image of Helaena's embroidery hoop from that afternoon—two dragons circling one another, one a tanned bronze and the other a pale green, their wings connected in mid-flight. But when she awoke, it was odd that it wasn't the sweet princess she dwelled upon, but her younger brother. It was the subject of Aemond Targaryen that occupied her mind.
As she tossed and turned in her bed, the sun just barely peeking over the horizon, Alayne crossed her arms, her nose wrinkling. She distinctly made the promise of loathing her entire trip due to the separation from her family and, if she was being honest, out of pure spite. She shouldn't be looking for friendship if she was going to be leaving soon. What would be the point?
However, Alayne had to admit, to find a person who knew the same loneliness as she was a miraculous thing. It fascinated her that there was someone who shared the contradicting contentment and misery of being a Targaryen; to have the status and name, but to be at the bottom of one's family. Her sister Rhaena knew of such despair, so the two of them often clung to one another before Baela would join them. But now that Alayne and Rhaena were separated by miles and miles of ocean...
The dark pit in her belly grew bigger with each passing day.
It reminded her that Aemond didn't have anyone. He was the son of a king, yet he had no chance of inheriting a title of his own. His siblings had dragons, and he didn't. There was no one like him.
