At a wedding celebration among members of the United States Navy, a chemical weapon, named the Splinter Bomb, mirroring the effects of the Obelisk, was unleashed by HYDRA agents. Unbeknownst to them, Simmons, undercover within HYDRA, discreetly transmitted critical intel to S.H.I.E.L.D. What she failed to realize was Raina's awareness of her role as a mole within HYDRA. Raina witnessed Simmons communicating messages to S.H.I.E.L.D., leading to Raina demanding a meeting with Coulson.
In a restaurant, Coulson talked with Raina, Hunter, Skye, Trip, and May as listeners, attempting to unravel Raina's intentions. She made an alarming proposal, insisting on taking Skye to her father, wielding the threat of exposing Simmons' undercover operation. Coulson refused, shocking Raina with his decision. Hunter discreetly tagged Raina before permitting her departure, obtaining Skye's father's whereabouts.
Following the transmission of the file, all attention focused on Simmons within HYDRA, prompting her boss Sunil Bakshi to dispatch a security team for her retrieval. Bobbi Morse, her superior, arrived with a team, catching Simmons in a trap. However, Bobbi unexpectedly assaulted the HYDRA agents, revealing herself as an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. operative to the young scientist. They fled to the rooftop, leaping onto a cloaked Quinjet piloted by Monica.

Meanwhile, Skye ventured alone to Zabo's hideout, stumbling upon a photograph of her infant self alongside her father before being intercepted by Coulson and the team. Witnessing the lifeless bodies of two patients, Skye concluded that her father was a monster, devastating her.
Upon their return to the base, Coulson welcomed back the undercover agents Morse and Simmons. Fitz hesitated in greeting Simmons, while Mack joyously received Bobbi. Hunter, however, expressed his displeasure at Coulson's arrangement, particularly having to work alongside his ex-wife, Bobbi.

The United Nations Headquarters had been attacked by mercenaries in the name of S.H.I.E.L.D. who were actually HYDRA while Glenn Talbot had given a speech there. Six individuals had lost their lives during the tragic assault.
Coulson had gathered information on the attack and had sent May, Monica, Bobbi, and Hunter to investigate a lead in Okinawa, Japan. He had instructed Agent Walters, an agent settled in Europe, to have her team on standby, while Simmons had been told to access the hard drive she had stolen from HYDRA Laboratories. She had asked Leo Fitz for help in accessing the hard drive, but that ended up in an argument.
Skye had been unable to stay emotionally detached when Grant Ward had talked to her about her father, so Coulson had used a Laser Barrier in the prison vault to halt their conversation.
During her conversation with her HYDRA contact, Bobbi had learned that HYDRA had been seeking Julien Beckers, a Belgian politician. Hunter, Monica, and May had saved Bobbi when her cover had been blown. Coulson had instructed Walters' team to find and protect Beckers.
After Senator Christian Ward, Grant Ward's brother, had a televised debate with said Beckers, calling S.H.I.E.L.D. a terrorist organization, he had found Coulson in his office. They discussed the Ward family history and that Grant had been in Coulson's basement. Christian had decided that he would reveal his connection to his traitorous brother and would speak kindly of S.H.I.E.L.D. if Grant had been turned over to his custody, to which Coulson had agreed.
Grant had shared everything he knew about Skye's father with her, how he had saved her from HYDRA's custody but could not save her mother. Ward was then taken into custody by the United States Armed Forces soon after. While being transported, Grant had adjusted his thumb to slip his handcuffs and had fatally subdued his guards, escaping custody.
Meanwhile, HYDRA agents had crossed off Agent Walters and her team, and Mack had assisted Fitz in opening the HYDRA hard drive and learned that the Beckers family had served HYDRA since Julien's grandfather. May, Monica, Bobbi, and Hunter had apprehended the HYDRA mercenaries, delivering them to Glenn Talbot.
