An acrostic poem is a poem in which the first letter of each line spells out a word, name, or phrase when read vertically.Acrostic poems, they were the poems of my childhood and maybe for you.
What makes a Acrostic Peom?
🧒 Decide what word want to write about. Ites all up to you
🧒 write down the word vertically
🧒 Think of some phrases or words that start with the same letters of the word you chosen
🧒 Fill in the other stanzas to create your poem :)
Example
Hell's punishments that is what you are
On the days I need to relax too!
Maybe teachers need to work less hard?
Every day I procrastinate what's the point anyway?
Wouldn't it save both our times?
Or would you stop us from our childhood before it's too late?
Rarely anyone puts effort into it anyway
Kaitlyn, should really shut up about due homework , shouldn't she?
Drum roll please.....Mini History lesson time!
Acrostics were common among the Greeks of the Alexandrine period and with the Latin playwrights Ennuis and Plautus. Medieval monks and poets also made this form of poetry popular during the Middle High German and Italian Renaissance periods.
They usually serve to highlight the name of the poet or his patron, or to make a prayer to a saint. They are most frequent in verse works but can also appear in prose. The Middle High German poet Rudolf von Ems for example opens all his great works with an acrostic of his name, and his world chronicle marks the beginning of each age with an acrostic of the key figure (Moses, David, etc.).
Several acrostics have recently been discovered in Roman poets, especially in Virgil. Among others, in Eclogue 9 the acrostic VNDIS 'in the waves' (lines 34–38) immediately precedes the words quis est nam ludus in undis? 'for what is your game in the waves?'', and DEA DIO (i.e. dea Dione 'the goddess Dione') (lines 46–51) in a passage which mentions the goddess Dione (another name for Venus).
