I'm just a kid
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes I stop and wonder... how on earth I got here, so close to adulthood, yet still attached to my childhood.
Often, I forget I'm just a kid.
Rushed into life;
Into adulthood,
Into something I'm not exactly ready for.
It's crazy to think that I'm actually growing up when I don't even know who I really am.
Can society give me a moment
To pause;
To breathe,
To have a moment to myself
And be a kid?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Do you have an extra pencil?" I hear a somewhat familiar voice whisper in my ear as they lean closer.

"You come to school and don't have a pencil? Really?" I grumble with a sigh, reaching into my bag to grab one. "Here." I hand him the pencil without making eye contact.

I can't look at him. The last time I really held eye contact with this man was the day before my tenth birthday, before he ignored me and left.

Before everything went to shit.

He looks different; I can tell you that. The freckles that once dotted his cheeks seem to be fading. His hair is slightly darker now, and tattoos peek through the black compression shirt he's wearing. Even the way he holds himself has changed.

Though it makes sense—it's been almost eight years since he was last around. I wonder if his eyes have changed too. Are they darker now? Or lighter?

A part of me wants to look over and get lost in them like I used to, but then another part of me refuses to give him that attention, to let him know that I care—because I don't.

I don't care.

I don't care.

I don't care.

I don't care.

I don't care— I never will care.

Subconsciously, my leg starts to bounce up and down as I glance at the clock.

Thirty more minutes until class is over.

Thirty more minutes of awkward silence between us.

Though it isn't silent; the teacher is talking, and students are writing or whispering to each other, trying not to get caught.

The clock ticks away.

It's not silent, yet it feels like it's just him and me.

It's silent— it's awkward.

It's just him... and me.

Time Skip

"So when I told her that, she was like—what the hell, Sage? Are you even listening to me?"

"Mhm, yeah, continue." I mumble, waving Jade off while keeping my eyes on the guy sitting a couple of lunch tables away from us.

"Who are you even looking at?" she sighs, glancing over my shoulder. "Owen? Really?" she asks, squinting at me as I make eye contact with her.

"What? He's cute." I shrug.

"Look, I support every crush you have, but really—Owen?" Jade says, exasperated.

"I do not have a crush on him." I groan.

"Yeah, and your eyes say differently." Jade wraps an arm around my shoulders. "If you really want someone to crush on, there's always the new kid. I mean, come on—he's cute, and he's just your type." She grins, glancing over at Ezra.

"What? No, ew. Never in a million years would I have a crush on him." I scrunch my face in disgust.

"You say that now." She smiles, making me roll my eyes. "Anyway, there's a party tonight. We should totally go."

"Another one? Was there not just one last week?" I question, sighing in annoyance.

"Yes, but come on! I already picked out our outfits and everything." She whines. "I'll wear black, you can wear red, and if Mikey is feeling better by tonight, he can wear... green! Yeah, green."

Green?

"Or white?" I suggest with a shrug.

"That too, but I was kinda thinking we'd be a watermelon, you know? You would be the base of the watermelon, Mikey would be the rind, and I could be the seeds." Jade shrugs with a smirk. "But you're coming, right? It'll be fun. You don't even have to drink; we can just dance and maybe meet some new people."

"I don't know, Jade... I have a lot of studying to do tonight."

"Aww, boo! It'll be fun, I promise." She frowns. "Look, I promise I won't bother you about parties for one whole month if you go with me tonight."

"Make it two, and we have a deal."

"Okay, deal." She grins, making me sigh deeply and lean on her shoulder. "Don't look so sad about it; I heard Owen will be there too," Jade mumbles.

"Really?" I say, ignoring the annoyance in her voice, hope filling mine. "Well, I guess I'll go—not that I'm going because he's going or anything." I shrug, lifting my head and looking back at Owen.

"And you say you don't have a crush on him," I hear her mumble.

"What did you say?" I turn to her with a glare.

"Nothing, bae." Jade laughs.
