Whispers in the Dark
===================================
The room is heavy with stillness,
shadows stretch long and silent.
Outside, the world moves in chaos,
but here, it's quiet,
too quiet.

A cold flicker of light,
and I reach for something—
something to fill the emptiness.
A whisper in the dark,
a name I shouldn't call.

Choices hang like smoke,
heavy in the air,
and though I know the cost,
the pull is too strong.

This isn't a game,
but it feels like one.
A move, a phone, a name—
and the line blurs.

Out here,
everything is borrowed.
Even the silence doesn't last.

Recap from chapter nine:

He shifted slightly behind me and lifted me carefully, his hands gentle but firm. "I know what will make you feel better," he said, pulling out a small bag with white powder inside.

My stomach tightened, though I couldn't quite explain why. I hesitated, looking up at him. He smirked, that glint in his eyes that I couldn't quite read. "You liked this yesterday, right?"

I couldn't tell if I wanted it or not, but I nodded slowly. I wasn't sure, but something about him made me feel like I could trust him, even if I was unsure of myself.

"I-" The sound of my phone ringing cuts me off before I can respond. The screen lights up, and a familiar name flashes: Mom. My chest tightens as I swipe to answer, already knowing what I'll hear.

"Where are you?" Her voice is slurred, I can picture her laying out on the couch with a million different types of alcohol bottles around her.

"I'm at a friend's house, Mom," I reply softly, keeping my voice steady. "Do you need me?"

Her sigh is heavy, filling the silence between us with a sense of weight I've come to recognize. "Yes, brat," she snaps, her voice jagged and raw. "Pick up some beers on your way home. Don't take all night."

My chest tightens further, the familiar ache gnawing at me. I glance back at Owen, who's watching me with a smirk that curves just enough to make my skin prickle. There's something dangerous in his eyes—a kind of satisfaction that borders on predatory.

"Okay, Mom," I say quietly, trying to keep my tone even, even as my throat feels like it's closing up. "I'll be home soon."

"Don't 'okay' me, Sage. You better not mess this up." Her words bite into me like sharp ice, but I force myself to breathe. To stay calm.
