Chapter 4: I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore

Amanda had heard about this place. She was amazed that this old drive-in movie theater
actually, still existed. It seemed so odd, mostly because the digital age has taken away a lot of
things from movies, but they still had this place. Amanda had heard about it on Spacebook, of all places.

There was this whole group dedicated to preserving it for this long. Obviously, they had to do some serious renovations over the years, but it still had that classic, 50s look to it, and for some reason, that whole "vintage" thing seemed to be pretty popular now among all of the kids at their school. Call them "hipsters" or whatever you want, they were just a group of snobby teens who thought anything before their time was somehow cooler than everything else. Amanda opened her phone to the Spacebook page:

Amanda: Oh my gosh! I'm sooo glad that they aren't taking this down! I can't wait to go!
To: Eddie, Matt, Sam.

Matt: Yeah, pretty cool.
Eddie: Now, if only they could preserve the record store that is going out of business downtown...:-(

Spacebook Status Update: Amanda: Headed to the drive-in with the gang! -with, Eddie, Matt, and Sam (via LocateMe)

Matt and Sam were sitting in the back seat, bickering about something or other, when they pulled up to Eddie's house. Amanda honked the horn. Something about the way he walked always made her smile. He had this bounce in his step that was unique to him, and it didn't matter if he was mad or not, he always walked that way. Amanda let out a hushed sigh as Eddie walked towards the car. She wanted to believe that she didn't have feelings for Eddie, but nights like this changed her mind.

"Hey," he said casually, stepping into the beat-up Ford Taurus.

Matt and Sam were laughing hysterically. They were playing this game in the backseat: "Deserted Island". Basically, you list out everything you would want with you if you were stranded on an island forever.

"Well, I just think, if I was stuck on a deserted island...I would want her..."
"Matt!!" Sam screamed, slapping him playfully on the shoulder.

Amanda and Eddie just looked at each other and chuckled. This is how they always were.

"What? Can't I at least say that I think Megan Fox is hot without you getting all defensive?"

Sam just looked at Matt with this disgusted look on her face.

"Eddie, back me up here, don't you think that any guy, ANY guy you would meet, would agree with me?"

Eddie just shrugged his shoulders. He didn't really want to get involved in this conversation. He knew it wouldn't end well if he sided with Matt. That was the difference between Matt and Eddie: Eddie at least knew when to keep quiet. Sometimes Matt didn't even have a filter.

"Well, whatever. Go get married to her or something!" Sam shouted.

Sam was very territorial. Matt and Sam had been together for almost six months. It seemed like every time any other girl was making eyes at Matt, she got jealous; super jealous.

"Well, if I was stranded on an island, I think all I would really need is music and Digs." Eddie started.

"I agree" Amanda said, "Although, I would also say that I want you guys to be there with me. I'd probably die of loneliness if I was stuck there all by myself."

"Good point" Sam said. "I wish I could get this idiot to understand that!" she said, slapping Matt playfully on the head.

When they finally pulled up to the drive-in, Eddie took out his phone, as if he was searching for something. He was waiting for a text message from Ana, but his inbox was empty. That delightful "pang" of Digs' voice that welcomed his ears every time I got a new text was not there. He went back into the sent messages and read them again to himself:

"I'm sending you a playlist."
-No response-

"Did you get my message?"
-No response-

"I just want to know..."
-No response-

Amanda grabbed his phone, seeing that he was scouring over his inbox for the twentieth time in the past several days.

"Hey! No texting!"

The movie was beginning. Tonight was awesome because they were screening The Breakfast Club. Even though they had seen it a zillion times, something about seeing it on the big screen made the whole experience of it even better. Amanda didn't love the movie just for the great acting; it had a great soundtrack. Eddie always said that any movie with a lousy soundtrack is not worth watching at all, and she definitely agreed with him on that.

She remembered the first time she watched this movie, over at Eddie's house. They must have been, like 12 years old. They've known each other for a pretty long time. She spent so much of her time at his house when they were younger. They would stay in and watch movies with him and talk 'til 3 in the morning, then they would fall asleep on the couch. For whatever reason, their parents didn't care. Not like anything was happening. They were just cute little kids, best friends forever. Best friends forever.

That thought kept running through her head as she watched him, instead of watching the movie. She watched the way the light from the movie screen reflected off of his eyes, and she wished. She wished for something more...

Later that evening, Amanda lay awake in bed. She couldn't sleep. There were too many things on her mind. She decided to text Eddie:

A: Hey, I know it's late, I couldn't sleep

E: Top 5 Favorite Songs atm?

A: What genre?

E: 80s

A: Come on Eileen, Ocean Rain, Lips Like Sugar, Head Over Heels, Love Will Tear Us Apart

E: I see you've got two Echo songs on there. Good choice.

A: Your turn!

E: Genre?

A: 90s!

E: Oh goodness...let's see...1979, You Get What You Give, Come as You Are, Island in the Sun, Creep

A: Putting Nirvana and Radiohead in the same list?

E: I do what I want! :-P

A: lol
E: I couldn't sleep either

A: Yeah, I kind of figured you would be up

E: Would you hate me for saying I'm still listening to depressing music?

A: Eddie...like...what kind of depressing are we talking?

E: Well, I went from The Smiths, all the way to like sad Death Cab, to Moneen, to just really emo. I just can't stop.

A: I know, I understand. I feel the same way sometimes.

E: That's why I'm glad I have you ☺

A: ☺

E: Too bad you aren't here right now. we could be listening together.

A: I would like that.

E: So tell me something

A: Like what?

E: I don't know. Something to cheer me up.

A: Hmm...okay. There once was this boy named Eddie, and he was pretty sad, and then his best friend came into his life and that made him really glad. Haha, I suck at poetry lol.

E: Hey, I like it. ☺

A: I made you smile!

E: You always make me smile

A: Good! Then I better be hanging out with you tomorrow!

E: Okay.

A: Well, good night

E: Good night. Sleep tight.

A: Don't let the horrifying zombies under the bed bite!

E: Ha! I won't ;-)
