CHAPTER NINETEEN
Growing Pains
——

CAITLYN HAD NOT SLEPT. She couldn't. Every dream or nightmare would be of his eyes staring into her soul as he burned to death.

And besides Klaus being dead, she had to worry about Caroline. Her sister. Who might potentially be descended from Klaus' bloodline.

The twins were leaving. They decided the night when Caitlyn got home in tears. Caroline had also been crying, thinking about Tyler. So the girls decided to leave together.

Caitlyn got out of the shower, wiping away the condensation on the mirror to look at herself. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, her cheeks were also red—but that might have just been from the hot water.

Her eyes drifted to the counter top where the crescent moon necklace was sitting. The necklace Klaus gifted her. She could have broken down right there.

Instead she closed her eyes and walked out of the bathroom, leaving the necklace there.

Caitlyn quickly got dressed, not wanting to waste any time before the council found them. She could hear Caroline in her room, packing her bag full of necessities.

Caitlyn sighed, running her hands through her now blow-dried hair. She decided to keep it down.

Her eyes moved around her room, looking for any important things she wanted to bring with her when a small blue velvet box caught her attention.

Her brows furrowed, that wasn't there last night—or maybe she was too distracted with her crying to notice. Caitlyn walked over, carefully picking it up.

It had a familiar scent. Smelt like home.

Inside the box was a piece of paper, she quickly opened it and her eyes widened at the drawing. It was her. Laying in Klaus' bed, wrapped around a pillow with a smile on her face.

Her mind drifted to the night when they took Klaus, right before Alaric killed him. She was in his bed, just like this. Smiling at him as she snuggled into his pillows.

How?

Was Klaus—no! She couldn't think like that. As if he were still alive. Caitlyn couldn't give herself false hope. She would only be hurt in the end.

And she didn't want to hurt anymore. Caitlyn now understood why vampires always turned their emotions off. If she was a vampire, her emotions would be nonexistent right now.
