Minjeong doesn't even get to finish typing in the final paragraph of her essay when Yizhuo barrels into their room with fumes coming out of her nose and ears. She tries to but with every letter typed in, Yizhuo's voice just seems to grow bigger and louder. And now Minjeong's almost certain she's deaf in one ear.
“She went out with some random girl, Minjeong. Can you believe that?” Yizhuo huffs and crosses the room to plop down onto her bed. “A girl who isn't me!” Yizhuo cries out dramatically, falling back onto her mattress, heaving a deep and heavy sigh.
Minjeong, hands twitching against her laptop keys, can only nod along. And then monotonously, she drawls, “No way. That's so bad, Ning. I can't believe she did that.”
Yizhuo is back upright on her bed just as Minjeong begins typing again, new words and phrases forming in her mouth. “Like, she seriously needs to stop flirting with me if the next thing she's going to do is go out on a date with a rando who probably isn't even involved in the industry because this just isn't funny anymore.”
“Totally,” Minjeong deadpans. She keeps her head in the game, keeps punching in the letters, word after word until she can't really hear Yizhuo anymore. That, however, is impossible. Because Yizhuo is Yizhuo, and she has a naturally loud voice and nature, and she cannot keep quiet for two seconds to save her life.
“And you know what's worse?” Minjeong hears footsteps approaching her until they stop at her side. She's cursing the angels as soon as Yizhuo's phone is slid into her view on her desk. A tweet is shown directly in front of her and there's little to no ways to sugarcoat what Minjeong is seeing in the image attached to the tweet. “The girl she was with didn't even look like she wanted to be there!”
The girl was her. She's the one in the picture.
Part of Minjeong wonders how the hell did Yizhuo not recognize her from her shoulder length auburn hair and the way she's sitting with her legs strangely crossed over one too many times, but she's also grateful that Yizhuo's currently too blinded by rage to connect the dots. Otherwise she would be running all over campus with an extremely angry Ning Yizhuo hot on her tail.
You see, Yizhuo has quite an unhealthy, quote-unquote, obsession with singer-songwriter Karina Yu. Yizhuo also tends to be insanely gatekeeper-ish with the people she loves and admires. And when Karina Yu is a part of the few people on Yizhuo's Loved Ones list, things get heated and that's because she has competition. There isn't one day where Yizhuo doesn't fight with Karina Yu's fandom on the internet, and Minjeong often grows concerned when she sees Yizhuo with dark circles under her eyes the next day after her online arguments.
Yeah. It gets rough on certain days. Today just happens to be one of those days.
“How could you tell if she didn't want to be there?” She ends up asking. Currently at a loss for words, Minjeong would much rather play dumb than to be chased by her own roommate out of their dorm room. She's also very much aware of the Twitter account created to spread gossip around the university and she doesn't want to make her debut on there just yet.
Yizhuo rolls her eyes. “Her body language and everything. It screams ‘I don't enjoy this at all! Please get me out of here!’.” She replies as if it was the most obvious thing ever, and Minjeong thinks to herself with a belated realization: Right. Psychology kid.
But if Yizhuo's already psychoanalyzed the picture of the girl with Karina and hasn't recognized her as Kim freaking Minjeong yet, Minjeong takes it as a win.
“I don't get why you're showing me this.”
“Because, Minjeong,” Yizhuo's pause makes everything much more dramatic, and Minjeong's heart doubles its pace with every passing second. The foreigner snatches her phone from Minjeong's table, taking it out of her sight, walks away from Minjeong and heads back to her bed to sit down at the foot of it, all while wearing a defeated frown on her pretty face. She sighs after some time as she looks up at Minjeong with freakishly gigantic eyes. “Everyone's saying that the girl is Karina's girlfriend.”
