Severus was knee-deep in mixing a new potion when he heard a light tapping on his study door.

"Come in," he said in his usual monotone voice.

Sapphire, his one and only child, opened the door. The sound of her little feet scampering across the floor to meet him pulled him out of his focus, and a smile tugged at the corners of his lips.

"Hello, bug," he said, pulling her into him so he could kiss the top of her wavy raven locks. "What do you need?"

"Could we go to Diagon Alley to get my school supplies? I really want to choose my wand," she said, her eyes brimming with excitement.

Severus let out a disappointed sigh.

"Genny will have to take you to fetch your things for school. You know that I can't be with you out in public, we wouldn't want your fellow Hogwarts students to think that you have an unfair advantage," he replied, his tone apologetic.

"I know, Dad. I just....wanted you to be there when I get my wand," Sapphire said, her eyes pleading with him.

"I'm sure you will find the perfect wand. And you have your list of books to purchase for First Year, and of course some new robes for the school year. Genny will be a great help, you won't need me at all," he said, trying not to give in to her puppy-dog eyes.

These were the moments that were the most difficult for Severus and Sapphire. Ever since her birth, her relation to Severus has been a secret. He always knew that she would attend Hogwarts, and he did not want her to face the potential ridicule that would come with her being his child. Severus had to remind himself that the lifestyle they led was for her own good, and that once she established herself as a witch, he could finally claim her as his own.

Severus ran a hand through her dark hair that matched his very own. He sighed once again.

"You know what, bug? I'll be there. I can just happen to be at Ollivanders when you pick out your wand with Genny, I'll be watching from a distance," he said, hoping to cheer her up.

Sapphire let out a satisfied squeal and hugged her father, burying her face into his chest.

"Thank you, Dad," she said, still pulled tight into his chest.

Severus returned her hug, cherishing the last few days that they had together before they would have to become strangers at Hogwarts. It would be difficult to try not to meddle in all of his daughter's affairs while she found her own way at the school.

Sapphire ran down the cobbled roads of Diagon Alley toward Ollivanders, her trainer-clad feet moving too quickly for Genny to keep up.

"Sapphire, you have to slow down!" Genny yelled from behind her.

Sapphire halted her running and giggled.

"Sorry Gen, I'm just excited. I've been waiting my whole life for this!" she exclaimed, mildly breathless from running.

"I know, lovey," Genny said, slinging an arm around Sapphire's shoulder. "As your 'auntie', I am also excited to help you get ready for school."

Genny had been Sapphire's nanny ever since she was born. She was a former Hogwarts student herself, and she was the first person Severus called when he decided to have a child. He wanted his own child to be raised by someone who he knew was a powerful witch and ideal role model. Especially since the child would be raised without a mother.
