Sapphire had just finished tying the laces of her favorite trainers when she heard Genny calling for her from downstairs. The day had finally arrived for her to begin her journey to Hogwarts.
She flew down the steps to meet Genny, trunk in hand and a wide grin plastered across her face.
"Ready?" Genny asked, a grin of her own spreading across her lips.
"Let's go!" Sapphire exclaimed, racing toward the door.
Sapphire had been waiting for this moment her entire life. Being a student at Hogwarts was all she ever dreamed of; the flowing robes, exciting quidditch matches, and being surrounded by students just like her. She could hardly contain her excitement on the journey to Kings Cross Station.
Genny trailed next to Sapphire as she took in the sights in front of her. The station was flooding with people, and she reached for Genny's hand so she wouldn't lose her in the crowd. They made their way toward the entrance to Platform 9 3/4, and Sapphire was basically trembling with anticipation.
They walked through the secret entrance, and they were met with a crowd of students and parents saying goodbye before the train's arrival. Genny tugged her toward a couple standing with their son.
Genny greeted the couple warmly, exchanging smiles and kind words. From what Sapphire could gather, they seemed to know each other. Genny gestured to Sapphire, introducing her.
"This is Sapphire, my niece. It's going to be her first year at Hogwarts," Genny said to the couple.
"Lovely to meet you, Sapphire," the woman said, extending her hand for Sapphire to shake it. "Adrian is going to be a First Year too, right Adrian?"
The boy smiled shyly at Sapphire, nodding to confirm his mother's words.
"Maybe you two can sit together on the train?" Adrian's mother suggested, pushing the boy towards Sapphire. "And hopefully you'll both be wearing silver and green ties by the end of the week."
Sapphire's eyes lit up. Adrian also came from a family of Slytherins. Maybe he could be her first friend, especially if they were going to be sorted into the same house.
Their conversation was interrupted by the Hogwarts Express finally arriving to the station.
Genny turned to Sapphire. This was the first time that they would be separated for an extended period in the whole of Sapphire's 11 years of life. Genny reached for Sapphire, pulling her into a hug.
"Be good, lovey," Genny said, fighting back tears. "Make so many friends and have fun. And don't forget to do your homework. And owl me whenever you want, I will always reply to your letters."
Sapphire melted into the hug for a moment before letting go.
"Thanks, Gen. I'll owl you right after the sorting ceremony, I promise," Sapphire said, giving Genny's hand a final squeeze before turning towards the Hogwarts Express where Adrian was waiting for her.
The pair got onto the train together and began searching for empty compartments, finally finding one and taking their seats. Sapphire spotted Genny through the window, waving goodbye until the train moved out of sight.
The two First Years sat in an awkward silence until Sapphire was brave enough to speak.
"So you want to be a Slytherin too?" Sapphire asked Adrian.
