The first week of classes at Hogwarts had passed without incident, and the new students were finally beginning to feel more at home. Sapphire spent much of her free time in the library or at the quidditch pitch, getting in some practice with Adrian.

She was in Potions, the class that she most excelled at. And the class that her father taught. She had gotten used to acting like they were strangers, but it still felt bizarre for him to call her "Miss Lillian" rather than by her first name.

In her Potions class, she sat at a table with the Weasley twins and Angelina. She could tell that her father was displeased with that choice, but he had yet to say anything to her.

They were working on a basic healing salve, something that Sapphire could mix up in her sleep. Her table mates, however, were not as advanced as her.

"Why does it smell like that?" Fred questioned, leaning over the cauldron. He wrinkled his nose in disgust.

"It's the calendula, they don't usually smell that bad until you mix them with the lavender," Sapphire answered, carefully chopping the rest of the ingredients to add to the mixture.

"How do you know so much about potions?" George asked, perplexed at her knowledge.

"It's just basic logic, you have to think about how things interact with each other. It's not too hard once you practice it," she replied.

"What would happen if I put this in there?" Fred asked mischievously, waggling a spring of wolfsbane over the cauldron.

"Fred, don't!" Sapphire exclaimed, but it was too late.

The mixture in their cauldron exploded, causing all of the students and Professor Snape to look in their direction. The four students were covered in a yellowish goo that smelled even more foul  than what Fred had complained about earlier.

Professor Snape hustled in their direction, and Sapphire braced herself for the lecture that she knew was imminent.

"What have you done over here?" Snape asked, his tone sharp.

"I started the potion with calendula and lavender, but we added wolfsbane to it," Sapphire answered, her voice meek.

"And whose bright idea was that, Miss Lillian?" Snape pushed on.

Fred cleared his throat. "It was me, Professor. I wanted to see what would happen."

Snape turned to Fred, giving him a glare.

"Well that wasn't very smart, was it Mr. Weasley?" Snape condescended, making all of the students in the room feel like they were shrinking. "5 points from Gryffindor for inability to follow instructions."

The Gryffindor students hung their heads and huffed, disappointed to lose points from their house. Snape turned to his daughter.

"I expected more from you, Miss Lillian. Don't let your peers hold you back," he said, staring down his nose at Sapphire. "Now clean up this mess."

Snape turned on his heel and headed for another table of students working on their potion. Sapphire bit the inside of her cheek, frustrated with herself for letting her father down.

George tapped her shoulder. "It's just Snape, don't feel too upset. He talks like that to everyone."

Sapphire knew that her friend was only trying to soothe her, but he didn't understand the full story. Snape wasn't just her professor. She had a lot to live up to, and she felt the pressure of it under Snape's watchful eye in the classroom.
