The walk out of the Justice Building doesn't feel real. I have this strange dream state in which I feel as though I am watching myself as I wave at the audience. I enter the car with the other tributes and Mysticia. The only voice bouncing around the car is Mysticia's claiming that we are extremely lucky to be reaped for the Quarter Quell.
I can't help but grow angry at her ignorance. She would not feel this way if her or her family were at risk of being reaped.
We climb out of the car and are greeted by a mentor, and the only victor of district 12, Rummage Lorman. He doesn't appear to be bubbly like Mysticia, but rather firm and strong.
Rummage won his games at 15 during the 5th game. Not many winners come out of 12, there was only one girl after him but she passed away, leaving him the only mentor and victor. Rummage was an older man and I wondered what he could possibly do to help me win.
The six of us board a train that has more food than all of 12. Mysticia gathers us at the dinner table and demands we indulge in the food. I gather a plate full as I realize I need to build up strength and weight to survive.
"You are going to want to find water and distance yourself from the other tributes" states Rummage.
"Oh please we have no hope of winning so what is even the point of discussing" states a distraught Maysilee.
I look over to the other boy tribute as he states "With that attitude there is no way you are winning"
"Leave her be Layth" states the girl tribute who I learned has the name of Reese.
"Look, I am just being honest, she is being a downer" yells layth.
"All of you settle down" says Mysticia barely containing patience.
Rummage speaks up again " None of you wanted to be reaped, I understand that but you have to put that anger aside if you want to win" the four of us grow silent as he continues on, "If there were no chance of a 12 tribute winning then I would not have won. It is anyone's game. You just have to be smart enough to realize it.
I notice that he is right, but I know I still can't win this. "What is the first thing I need to do when I get to training" I blurt out,
Rummage ponders before sighing "Don't show your strengths to the other tributes, they want to know what you are good at. Practice something new and save your best skills for our private training".
We all nod and eat this peculiar but tasty rice with a brown sauce draped over top of it. There are breads of all sorts and fruits of all different colors. Most things in the seam lack color and flavor, but these foods are sparks and burst with flavor during each bite.
An Avox enters the room with a large cake covered in swirled decorations, She sets the cake down in front of us without making any eye contact. As quick as she entered she is gone.
The cake is delicious and I never realized how much I have been missing out on. My family was too poor to even think about these sorts of luxuries.
Mysticia suggests we rest before our big day tomorrow. Rummage seems to agree with her even though I don't think he likes her. As I walk back to my room Maysilee grabs my hand and I feel a sense of comfort.
"We could work together, you know. We might make a perfect team" she states with a tone full of hope.
"We could try to work together. But I am not trained in anything" I explain. It is true I have no special skills to share with her.
"Neither do I, that's why we make such a great team" she says as she backs down the train hall to her room.
