It's been a year since I had that dream, a year since my best friend left me, a year since I stayed with my gardener, whom I asked to stay with my family because when he showed me his house I was devastated. A year since Aunt Claire and I became so close and realized she's a forever deal. A very long time indeed of me going through my school hallways with my head held high but my emotions destroyed. Caleb didn't leave the school; he stayed and never dated anyone else. I stayed in the canteen with only Delvis by my side. I always watched Devi in expectations that she would give me a chance, but she never looked my way. If she did, I never saw.
So now, standing in that same hallway with Devi hugging me with tears in her eyes and her body wracking with her sobs. Everyone looked at us shocked as I also was. "Devi what's wrong?" I asked, patting her back, hugging her back. "It's grandpa, he's dead," she said through her sobs. A wave of shock passed through me as I heard what she said. "How, what happened?" I asked, panicked. "I don't want to talk about it, can I stay at yours for sometime?" She asked. "You forgive me? You'd stay at my house?" I asked, shocked. I'd be so happy because I miss her. "If you want me to." She broke the hug and watched me with her teary eyes. "Of course, I'd like that. Come on," I said. I texted Delvis that we'd be ditching, and I'd explain later. I sat in my car with her and drove in silence, it was uncomfortable but I was happy my best friend was back with me. I'd not be alone again.
We got to the house and got off the car. I went to Devi's side to give her the support to walk. Aunt Claire was in front of the door with a frown. I ignored her and went inside. I heard her scoff and speed off to the kitchen. "What's wrong with Claire?" Devi asked in a croaky voice. "Nothing," I simply answered. We went into my room because she asked to sleep with me. She was scared to sleep alone. After some crying, she slept which allowed me to go to Aunt Claire. She had a look that said 'meet me later, we've got to talk'. I was a little nervous because I told her about the dream a year ago and she kept putting things in my head. Devi is bad news, stay away, she's keep chanting, so pathetic. I knocked at her door. "Come in," she said. I opened and went in with my head down. "You wanted to talk, Claire?" I asked. "Why is Devi here?" She asked with a cool tone. "Her grandpa died, so she needed comfort and I gave it," I concluded, looking up for the first time. "Don't say I didn't warn you," she said before lying on her bed quietly. "You mad at me?" I asked. She was silent, so I figured she needed peace. I left back to my room. Devi was peacefully asleep. I went to take a shower. I finished quickly and opened my bathroom door, wrapped in a towel, I gasped when I saw Delvis in one corner. "What are you doing here?" I whispered shouted, "Here to ask about what happened and why I'm hearing rumors about you and..." He stopped talking when he turned and saw Devi on the bed. "So it's true?" He asked, watching me with disbelief. "I can explain." I said. "No, I can explain. She needed help and..." He cut me short. "No. It's okay, she saw she had nothing, so she came running back to you I see. Just know that we all telling you, so don't be shocked when you find out she's just a hypocrite," he almost shouted. "Shhh, don't wake her," I whispered. He shook his head and came closer. "You know I love you and would always be here...just remember that, baby girl," he said. I nodded my head, leaning into his touch. "I love you too, and I'd be careful," I said. I kissed him briefly to seal my promise. He kissed me back and hugged me. "I have to go. I'll call you when I'm free," he said, leaving. "Sure," I responded. I looked at Devi as she slept on the bed.
