We managed to track down where Sam was staying pretty easily. It wasn't that hard because this town had only a handful of motels, and he used one of his go-to aliases. So, we hung around inside, waiting for him to return. When we heard the key turn in the doorknob, Dean stood up and positioned himself by the door. Sam swung it open and stood there looking at us, shocked.

"Howdy, Sam," Dean said, throwing a punch that sent Sam stumbling backward, landing in a bush just outside the room.

I immediately jumped to my feet. "What the hell, Dean?!" I rushed out to Sam. "You don't think he's had enough head trauma lately?!"

"New rule." Dean reached out, helping Sam up. "You steal my Baby, you get punched."

Sam regained his footing, and we headed back inside.

"The hell were you thinking, Sam, running off like that?" Dean asked. "I mean, for all I know, Satan could have been callin' your plays."

Sam grabbed a can of soda from the fridge, pressing it against his head. "Dean, look, how many times do I have to tell you? I'm fine."

Dean nodded skeptically. "Oh, yeah, no, you're a poster boy for mental health. You have any idea the kind of horror shows I had going on in my head?"

Sam sighed. "Dean, I left you a note. There was a job in town."

Dean nodded. "A Kitsune. Yeah. Yeah. No, I know. And you ignore our phone calls. Why exactly?"

"Because I wanted to take care of it. And I did. I took care of it," Sam said.

Dean furrowed his brow. "Really?"

Sam nodded. "Yes."

"Where's the body?" Dean asked.

Sam shook his head. "There is no body."

"Why not?" I asked.

Sam sighed and hesitated. "Because I let her go. She's gone."

"You what?" Dean shook his head. "Why?"

Sam looked down and sighed. "Because I met her when I was a kid. When you and Dad left me and Maddi so you could hunt that Kitsune. I took Maddi to the library to do some research for you, and I met a girl named Amy. When we left, I saw her getting bullied by some kids, and I helped her out. Got hit a few times myself, so she invited us back to her house to get some ice for my eye and eat some food."

"Okay?" Dean asked, listening to the story, neither of us getting the point yet.

"We were hanging out, having a good time, when Amy heard her mom pull into the driveway. She had Maddi and me hide from her mom in a closet. She said it was because boys weren't allowed over, but she genuinely seemed afraid," Sam explained. "Her mom came in and told her that they needed to pack up and leave because she was being tracked by two hunters in a 'piece-of-crap Impala...'"

"Hey," Dean interjected.

"Not the point of the story," I said to him, then turned my attention back to Sam.

"I knew then they were the Kitsune you guys were hunting, but I also knew that I really liked Amy. I thought she was a good person." He sighed. "I mean, what she was? She could've easily taken me and a four-year-old out, but she didn't." He shook his head. "Anyway, she managed to convince her mom to get the van ready so she could pack. Once her mom headed outside, I stepped out of the closet, ready to take out Amy. She was a monster, and I was a hunter. That's what we are supposed to do, right?" he asked, shaking his head. "Neither of us wanted to hurt each other. So she told me to run. I grabbed Maddi, but when I went for the door, her mom came back. She almost killed us, but Amy took her out instead." He sighed. "Amy's the reason you didn't find me and Maddi dead the next day."
