I HAVE ONE EXAM LEFT IN SIX DAYS' TIME BUT THE GRIND NEVER STOPS !.!.!.! (i say after emailing my ancient history tutor basically saying 'sir help me' lmao). got to use the word 'homoerotic' in my final literature paper last week tho. god bless donne's holy sonnet 14
Huddled underneath the climbing house, the world around you seemed to vanish. Time passed by on its own, leaving your surroundings temporarily untouched—the only sign that you were still part of the world you had grown up in was the time on your phone screen changing with every minute that passed.
It was like you were in heaven. Your mind was too enraptured by the present, for once, that it had no time to even consider thinking about anything else. It was like you had been hypnotised.
After a while, though, it began to grow dark, and the encroaching night brought a drop in temperatures that had both you and BEN shivering in your coats.
'Wanna head back?' BEN asked. 'It's fucking freezing.'
'Yeah. I'll message Frankie and tell him to get drinks ready—just so we don't turn into human icicles.' You took BEN's hand as he helped you crawl out from under the climbing house. 'Ah, shit, my knees.'
'Come on, you old pensioner,' he said, his voice becoming mock sympathetic for your ailing bones. 'Let's get you your Ovaltine.'
'Just wait until you've been alive for longer; your knees will start to ache sooner or later.'
'Nope, I'm gonna have knees of steel.'
'Aw, your naïvety is adorable.'
Hands still intertwined, you both meandered back into town. Light conversation drifted through the air as the two of you talked about nothing in particular, just happy to be near each other. If there had been anyone else walking down the street, you would have looked like a regular, lovey-dovey teenage couple.
But...there was no one walking down the street. You were completely and utterly alone with BEN. It was almost heavenly to be able to exist with him like this, away from prying eyes with seemingly the entire world to yourself. Everything seemed a little brighter, and the air around you felt lighter to the point that you might have been able to float.
You felt almost unstoppable, despite the impact the weird realm from a few days ago had had on your mind. Maybe you were experiencing true happiness after all this time.
Then things began to go wrong.
You were mid-conversation when it first began. It started off small, like a tiny nagging thought in the back of your head, or the faraway buzzing of a nearby mosquito. Unless you really, really focused on it, you barely noticed that it was there. Maybe there was an itch; your fingernail brushed against your skin, scratching lightly on the spot where it was.
Nothing happened.
And then...it started to grow. Louder and louder, in a horrifying and excruciating crescendo.
There was something in your skull and it wanted to get out.
Through your squinted eyes, you could see that something had appeared in front of you. When did it get there? It was mere feet away. A tall and unnatural creature—its arms were far too long to be human, fingers thin and bony with protruding knuckles, its skin a sickly white. Its face was as blank as a canvas, with no eyes, mouth, or nose, yet the feeling that it was staring at you was overwhelming. You knew what (or who) it was; you had been on the Internet long enough to recognise the creature in front of you, and that knowledge alone only aggravated the fear in your lungs.
