Perched on the wall, BEN stared up at the blank, empty face of his boss with what could only be described as 'mild annoyance'. He was on thin ice, and he knew that, but he couldn't help but be irritated that he had to put his valuable time with you on hold for this.

'What,' he asked, 'do you want?'

'A chat,' replied his boss.

'About what? We have nothing to talk about.'

'Oh, but we do. How about we talk about whatever...this is.' He raised his abnormally long arms slightly, gesturing to the world around him. 'I thought I told you that this is out of bounds.'

'Did you? I don't remember that.'

'Don't play dumb with me, brat! You know exactly what you're not meant to do, which is why you insist on breaking our contract at every opportunity. I don't know why I bother keeping you around.'

BEN's faced morphed into a look that decorated human faces for centuries, and only appeared when the person had been handed a literal or figurative gold mine. He said, 'Then get rid of me. End the contract and let me be a regular old ghost. It's not like you don't have enough minions who can collect shit for you.'

'Don't try and trick me,' Slenderman said sharply. 'I know your games. If our contract ends, you won't have enough power to sustain this illusion for another eighty years. Humans live for a long time nowadays. Will you manage to keep this up until they "die" of old age?'

'I'll manage,' BEN replied, 'and you know that. I'm not just your proxy—I lead the cult. Their power is my power. Even without our contract, I could fight you and win.'

It was a bet that many had made in the past, and BEN had always been there to watch the challengers fall to his boss, blood generally pouring out of a natural orifice or a gaping wound. It had always been a game to him, watching the poor sod struggle against his god-like boss, but now...now the tables had turned, and he sat on the wall like it was his throne, as though the odds were perpetually in his favour.

'You think you could win in a fight against me?' Slenderman laughed, filling the air around him with sharp static. 'Don't be ridiculous. You think your cult is strong enough compared to me? I'm a god. You are nothing.'

'Not in this world,' BEN said. 'That's my role. No one enters a king's court and starts making orders.'

'Kings are below gods.'

'But I won't be forgotten, unlike you. Gods rely on worshippers for their power, just like you rely on fear. All it takes is for humanity to move on, and then you'll be nothing. Just a speck of dust that gets brushed aside,' BEN sneered. 'I'll outlast you by a mile. As long as the Internet and the cult both exist, then I can live forever.'

Slenderman scoffed. 'Being overly optimistic will get you nowhere.' A tentacle appeared behind him, flying forward and aiming directly for the space between BEN's eyes. Were it not for him ducking down, pushing himself off the wall and moving to the side, the projectile-like tentacle would have pierced directly through his skull.

'Aw, did I hit a nerve?' he asked tauntingly as he got to his feet, taking a few steps back. 'Is someone scared of being forgotten?'

'Go and fuck yourself.'
