Reunion
March, 2012 - 1 month before the storyline
"YOU HAVE EVERYTHING, RIGHT MIRINAE-YAH?" HER aunt called from outside in the driveway. "The car's started and ready to go!"
"Yes, and I'm coming," she answered. She raced down the stairs with her luggage, put her shoes on, and went outside. After locking the front door, she made her way to her aunt's car, placing her bag in the trunk before making her way to the back seat.
"Do you need to stop by a department store in Tokyo to have something to wear tomorrow night or are you all good?" Yua asked as she switched the gearshift to reverse to back out of the driveway, hitting the road soon after.
"I'm good. I managed to grab something from home when I went back," her niece answered, buckling in her seatbelt.
"I just wanted to tell you again that I really appreciate you agreeing to come to my company's party. Even if you didn't have to." Yua smiled through the rearview mirror.
"It might be selfish of me but it was mainly 'cause I wanted to see Tokyo again," Mirinae admitted. "It's been a while and I've missed the place."
"Right. Been almost 2 years, huh? I forget since I go there once a month." the older woman chuckled. "Funny how they move me to the Tohoku branch yet they still expect me to come to Tokyo monthly for these gatherings."
"Well, Tokyo's where the headquarters are," Mirinae pointed out. "Plus, I thought these gatherings weren't mandatory?"
"True. But, almost everyone goes so they kinda expect me to come. So it's unmandatory but mandatory, you know? Also," Yua briefly met her niece's eyes through the rearview mirror before gazing back at the road, "these gatherings aren't too far from what you're used to, you know."
"What do you mean?" the younger asked curiously.
"I don't think you've ever been to one, but you're familiar with Hoesik, right?"
"Yeah, mostly through my old man. He'd usually come home dead wasted after attending them with his coworkers."
"I... see." Yua sweat-dropped at the new piece of information regarding her brother-in-law but continued to speak. "Well, my workplace does something similar around every month. We get together at some restaurant to eat and drink and socialize a lot. Try to get to know each other more, especially if we're from different branches. Increase the closeness among existing relationships, settle differences. Except this month, the chairman decided to host a party for the employees at his house instead."
"So, basically an adult formal," the girl concluded.
"You could say that." Her aunt nodded. "Also, you wouldn't be the only young adult among middle-aged men and women... I hope. My coworker-and-somewhat-friend told me that he would try to convince his son to come, too. I believe he said he's around your age. Maybe even the same. So if you guys meet, you can have a conversation with him and maybe even become friends. Bond about how you're both the only young ones at a place meant for boomers." She chuckled.
