This is for someone who always makes me feel like I belong. No one needs to hear this more.
All brains come with their own unique weaknesses and strengths. No one brain is better than any other.
For a long time, I didn't know this. I thought there was something wrong with me, something broken.
But the best thing about synaesthesia is that I am always surrounded by colour. My own personal rainbow.
This is not just for synesthetes, but for every neurodivergent person I know (or don't!): your brain is beautiful.
And this doesn't erase the challenges you will face, or the confusion you will feel.
But when people ask if I would get rid of my synaesthesia, if I could, I can't help but be surprised. Because it is a part of me, and without it, I would be someone else entirely. And I don't want that. Not any more.
So when I say 'think in rainbows' I don't necessarily mean it literally. I mean 'think in all the sounds and scents and flavours that we know are there, even if no one else does'.
So thank you to a certain black swan, who helped me to not hide all the weird and wonderful parts that make up my brain. I hope I do the same for you.
