"This is Emma," she said, answering her cell.
"Hello, Emma. It's Mr. Harper. Sorry for the strange number. I'm calling from my personal phone, but you should save it just in case. Ms. Wright is coming to Seattle next week, and I was hoping you could come meet with her in person."
Ms. Wright was the author Emma was assigned when she accepted her promotion to editor. The woman was as much of a night owl as Emma, and they had loved being able to call and meet online when most of the business world was asleep.
"I would love to," Emma answered honestly.
"Wonderful. We'll put you both in the same hotel. You'll be given a travel stipend which will include your stay, some wining and dining with Ms. Wright, and a gas budget. I'll have Marnie send over the details."
"Thank you. I look forward to seeing you again as well."
"Of course. You can use the office while you're here if you want, and we'll meet up for dinner one night. See you next week."
"Here that, Wyatt? I'm going on my first business trip. Note to self, don't mention my former lover was a ghost. Or my former husband was Todd Murdock. Better yet, don't mention anything in my life before Valentines of this year."
She immediately called Katie to make a plan for River and was relieved to hear her friend excited about keeping him while she was away. Then she invited her, Jess, and Cam over to dinner on Thursday to celebrate this next big step in her career and finally get to know one another.
Emma was nervous that her friends might not like each other, so she did what always soothed her—cooked. She opted for Italian this time, knowing Jessie's love for fresh gnocchi. Katie had an odd affinity for meatballs, so they made the menu. And Cam's obsession with sweet coffee led Emma to make her famous tiramisu. It had always been a winner at dinner parties, and she loved it almost as much as lemon cake. By the time everyone arrived, there was enough food to feed a high school football team, and River was more than ready to relax after his human's eight-hour freak out.
It ended up being for nothing. Katie and Jess knew each other from Dockside, and Cam was so impressed with Zeus that she instantly befriended the woman who brought him. The only person who was awkward was Emma, but the ladies didn't let her stay that way for long. Jessie popped a bottle of champagne, and Cam followed with a toast that had Emma both laughing and sighing with a shake of her head.
"To Emma for finally accepting that she's good enough to have what she deserves and strong enough to go after what she wants. Be it a promotion or an orgasm."
"I never should have told you," Emma muttered, her cheeks burning.
"What! The fact that you finally pulled the vibrator back out is just as important as career goals."
"Cam," Katie chided softly. "That's a bit crass after Asher passing."
"Asher?" Jessie said confused.
"Wyatt's middle name," Emma admitted, embarrassed even more.
"You haven't told her, have you?" Cam challenged with an arched brow.
"She knows the parts that matter," Emma said through clenched teeth.
"Does she know you were dating a ghost?" she disclosed with a huge grin.
"A what?" Katie squeaked, looking between them.
"I didn't want her to think I was nuts and take River away," Emma whined.
"Katie, I think you should sit with us while Emma serves dinner," Jessie said, guiding the stunned redhead to the table.
