"Caleb Page?" I exclaimed, shocked.
"Technically, his father, but Caleb will eventually inherit the place."
"But how did you know? I mean, how did you know about this? I thought everyone's information in that place is confidential, which includes the owners."
"I found out when Conrad approached me for the job. Someone tried to sell out videos of what was going on inside Amythest."
I felt a knot forming in my stomach. The thought of private, personal moments of people being shared and exploited without consent made me cringe. That place was supposed to be private, but if someone had managed to publicize those scenes, the place failed to establish trust.
"When I had your friend's phone, Caleb, that night, I found his identity. He was the culprit."
My mind couldn't process this information. "Why would Caleb do that? Isn't it risking the whole company and their name?"
Jake's expression dulled. "Well, he's risking everything. That's his plan. He doesn't want to take over the business. That's what I heard from Conrad."
If I were Caleb, I think I would feel the same. I now understood why he said something about women not taking them seriously. And since Conrad, his older brother, was still single until now, Caleb must be thinking he didn't want to end up like his brother. They couldn't find a woman decent enough to accept the business they were in.
I don't know. Women are right to be scared of that place. It's just too much to handle. But...Jake...
"Mr. Page wants his sons to run the Amythest." Jake's words pulled me out of my thoughts.
Clearing my throat, I said, "If Caleb doesn't want it, they should respect that. If they care for him, they let him choose his own path."
"Easier said than done."
I sighed. "Why did Conrad approach you?"
"He's aware of my background, my connections," he explained cryptically. "He needed someone who could navigate the dark web and ensure that the situation doesn't escalate. I've kept it under control now. Caleb just needs a reprimand."
"Are the Page's strict? They're not gonna hurt Caleb, are they?" I asked, worried for Caleb.
"You seem to care for this boy?" he asked, his tone giving nothing away.
"He's just a friend,"
"Whom you would have eaten each other's faces hadn't I intervened," he said, a hint of jealousy in his tone.
I remembered the kiss, and I almost laughed. Caleb did really try to date and act normal with me that night. He was smart to use me to make Sasha jealous.
"We're not a thing whether you believe it or not, Jake, but I like it that you are jealous." I shrugged happily.
He just hummed, but I took that as a confirmation. The woman in me smiled triumphantly.
We were heading north. I wonder where he would take me this time.
"What do you exactly do, Jake? Are you a computer genius?" I knew he was good at it. He even hacked my devices.
I noticed the corner of his mouth rising into a smirk, his eyes still focused on the road. "I can navigate it more easily than everyone you know."
"Is that your job? Hacking into people's secrets?" I scoffed.
He chuckled, the sound low and captivating. "Let's just say I have a particular set of skills. My work involves navigating through the complexities of the digital world, uncovering information, and sometimes, ensuring that certain things stay hidden."
