The envelope did not in fact contain a detention, it contained an invitation to a tea party... Although that isn't exactly what he wrote, the letter said:

A select amount of students from each house have been invited to a tea party with another house (In your unfortunate case Gryffindor).
This is a formal occasion, so please dress accordingly.
A plus one would be highly appreciated.. to expand the party list... (those are prof. Mcgonnagals words, not mine..)
