It's not even 10 minutes into practice, and it feels like I'm about to go insane. Coach has made us run 5 laps, but 6 for me because I showed up 3 minutes late. We're expected to wear our jerseys every practice and I couldn't find mine, and then I remembered it's in Elles dorm from the time I slept over. Let's just say it was complicated getting it back.
Camyrn is eating a bag of hot chips during break when he sits next to me on the bleachers. "You okay?" He has his long dreads in a ponytail on his head, and a fresh cut beard.I realize I've been staring straight ahead for minutes, still trying to catch my breath. I look at him and nod. "Just tired."
He offers me his gatorade, and I get a waterfall. "You've been tired since you got back." The cool air blows through my hair. "You were being weird, texting me about Jason."
I don't answer. I don't have it in me to talk at all. After what I found out, I don't want to do anything but punch the wall and Jason's face. But part of me accepts what happened. That morning, I packed up my things before she woke up and called an uber back after saying my goodbyes to everyone. Aiden and Mitchell were confused as to why, but I didn't tell them.
Despite me not wanting to talk, I tell him everything because he's my best friend. Everything that goes on in his life, good or bad, he tells me. I want to do the same for him.
"When I asked you if you knew who that person was," I start. I look at him finally. "It was because Elle's phone was going off and it was Jason messaging her.."Camyrn doesn't do anything but shakes his head slowly in disappointment.
I go on. "I didn't want to be nosy, but I just had to find out what was going on, especially after she was hiding her phone the entire night. I went to her and Jason's messages, and apparently they've been texting all this time. Sending nudes and all that shit."It makes me mad just thinking about it. How someone I knew, someone I let in my life when I hate letting people in, do that to me. It's crazy to think that I was the one who helped him get off of drugs and even saved his life from them one night.
"Bottom line, I'm done with her. I just don't want anything to do with her."He looks at me. "And you're just now coming to terms with that?" He asks. I furrow my eyebrows, confused.
"It took for her to cheat so many times on you for you to know that she's a cheating slut and needs to be kicked to the dirt?"
I scoff softly. "You don't understand. I've known her for a long time, I guess I just had this emotional attachment to her. I loved her more than she loved me. I was the one taking us seriously." I wipe the leftover gatorade off my mouth."I used to bawl my eyes out everytime found out stuff she did.... but last night? I didn't feel a goddamn thing."
Camyrn stares at me while I talk, listening.
"It was weird. And it was definitely a new feeling. But I've never felt more free in my life."
Coach blows the whistle and everyone starts running back on the field.
He pats my back, smiling. "This may sound corny but I'm happy for you bro. You deserve so much better." He winks. My mind thinks about someone after he says that, but I immediately push that thought away. I need to focus on football, winning the playoffs, and making my dad proud. He's all I got.
Coach shouts at us to get moving, and we start stepping down the bleachers. "I swear, how is your stomach not on fire right now?" I say, laughing. "I had one taki last practice and needed to sit out the rest."
He shrugs. "I guess you just get used to it." He crumbles up the bag and tosses it in the trash.
