Victor
My initial shock quickly turned into anger as I realized that she had been out partying while the rest of us were filled with worry. But as I looked into her eyes, I saw the same fear and vulnerability that I had been feeling. Without hesitation, I let her into my home and held her close, knowing that she would probably get a DUI for being asleep on my porch, especially since the police had an active investigation going on.
I laid her gently on the couch and went to fix her something. I searched my medicine cabinet; as soon as I laid my eyes on what I needed, I stalked back to the couch. Her light snores faded and she began to move around slightly. Her eyes fluttered open and she moved the cover aside. She was adamant on getting up, trying to balance herself as the hiccups kept leaving from her body.
"Just sit down," I pushed her with one finger and she fell back on to the couch. "Here," she easily complied and opened her mouth; the moist pink tip of her tongue grazed my finger as I fed her the medicine. "Now, get out of here and run home before your dad notices."
She grumpily moaned and began to throw a tantrum, "I'm tired," she dipped back against the couch.
"If you don't go now, trouble will find you," I warned. Her eyes shot opened and she stood up with a huff. "Fine. Thanks anyway I guess." She slammed my front door without a glance back. Her footsteps got quieter and quieter in the distance.
I threw my head back and sighed. I felt like I could never win with her. I went for a cold shower to clear my mind.
When that didn't work, I stalked outside in the crisp morning air to my mailbox. The thick stack of mail had been waiting for me. I was skimming through the stack when a patrol car rolled up. The officer rolled his window down. It was the same officer from earlier who questioned the neighborhood early this morning about Gorja's murder, detective Reach if I recalled correctly.
"Didn't take you for a morning person," the officer greeted me.
I nodded, "I'm not but the early bird gets the worm."His smile faded before he spoke again, "Where you headed?"
"No where," I rose my brows."Not you," he replied, "little missy behind you."
I turned to see Aria. I was surprised to see her; I didn't hear or smell her coming.
"School," she said plainly.
"Like that?" Detective Reach drove his car up a few inches to look at Aria better. She was wearing grey joggers and a grey hoodie."You may be a police but you're still an asshole," Aria mumbled.
"What'd you say?" Detective Reach provoked Aria.
"Nothing," Aria rolled her eyes."Where were you this morning between the hours of 12-6?" He asked Aria.
"Asleep," Aria lied. "Just like everyone else on this block.""Liar. If you were home earlier, I would've questioned you. Lie again and I might add you to my suspect list." He warned.
"At a party with drugs and alcohol and illegal drinking. There. Does that make you happy?" Aria replied.
I stepped in, "Alright. What do you need from her?"
"I can take care of myself," Aria scolded me and pushed me aside.
"Be careful, I might arrest you for assaulting the man." He joked."I only lied cause my dad is super strict. And I barely pushed him," she rolled her hazel eyes. "So keep this to yourself in your investigation. Deal?"
"I got enough things to do without making promises to kids. I'm good. But just so you know, I'll be watching you." He said to Aria. "And you too," he darted his eyes at me before he made a u-turn and cruised away from the block.
"What's your problem?" I quickly asked her when the patrol car was out of sight.
"What's yours? Haven't eaten?" She teased.
Though, she was correct. I groaned.
"You make everything so difficult.""Sorry I'm not a stupid manipulative kid," she said with a plain face.
I'd had enough of her sarcasm. "Okay. Fine, princess. I hope you have a wonderful day." I walked away.
"Wait. Is that it?" She bit her lip.
"Yes. What more do you want from me? You tell me stay away, leave you alone and when I do it, you don't like it," I scoffed and my voice rose an octave, "You say you're not a brat, but you're the sole definition of a brat. I'm not playing these games with you. I'm done. I was done months ago." By the time I had finished my rant, my princess was crying.
I felt so badly. I wanted to wipe them but I figured nothing I did would make anything better.
I released a breath of air, "I'm sorry. I'm not a morning person. Princess let me fix this," I cooed.
She held her arms out, with her palms facing me, "I'm fine," she screamed. "I have school. Good morning and goodbye." She skipped away.
Nothing ever went right between us. It was her smart sarcastic mouth.
And my overbearing attitude.
I hated not having a distraction from Aria. I was craving right now, but I suppressed the hunger and went to my usual hospitals to secure a freezer of blood. I had to hide it well within my truck, as the police were observing everything.
As I passed the beautiful house on the corner, I saw the yellow police crime scene tape. From what I could gather, there were no leads. I shook my head at the sight of the tape and sped up to get home.
It was well within the evening and it was long past time for me to eat and have my fill for the day. I had been rudely interrupted earlier while I was with Camille when the detective came questioning. She was hidden, as she didn't want to be seen or want anyone to know she was here, so naturally he only questioned me. Afterwards, she fled my house quicker than I could snap my fingers.
But now, I had no worries. Just a freezer full of blood to guzzle.
