Bright lights shine down on me as I try to peel my eyes open. I hear a constant beeping and look to my right to see a heart monitor. Looking down, I see all these needles and wires sticking out of me as well as a nasal cannula. As my mind starts to clear up I remember seeing Dr.Smith and panic starts to set in. I frantically start ripping the needles and wires out of my skin and take my breathing thing off, all while the heart monitor is going crazy.
I swing my legs over the edge of the bed and I feel a sharp pain in my stomach and thigh. Limping over to the door I open in slowly and peek into the hallway to see nobody there. I slowly start to make my way down the hall, shaking to the point where my legs almost give out. I keep looking behind me waiting for someone to appear at any moment to take me back to the experiment rooms.
'Hurry up, move faster, they're going to catch you.' I see the exit and start to move faster. But before I can reach the door, hands are grabbing at me, picking me up and carrying me back down the hallway. I start yelling and trying to get away from whoever is taking me, clearly, back to my room.
"Let me go! Let me go! Please." My yelling doesn't work and my sobs are getting harder to choke back. As I'm placed back onto my bed I try to calm myself and my breathing down and look up to who was carrying me.
Landon.
"W-where am I?" I stutter as I frantically look around at my surroundings
"Pack hospital. There was a car accident" he says calmly as he sets me back down on the bed.
Suddenly everything comes rushing back to me. The accident, the van, Leo.
I turn to look at him. "Where is he?" I ask with a straight face.
"Where's who?" He asks with a questioning look.
"Where's Leo?" I say this time more harshly.
"Is that the pup?" He asks confused.
"Don't play stupid with me. You said that you would make him disappear. Where the fuck is he?" Ordering and talking to another alpha the way I am is probably not a good idea but at this point I don't care. When I don't get an answer I start hitting him.
"That's enough." He growls while pinning my arms down to the bed. "I'm telling you I don't know where he is. When I got you and your beta out of the car I saw an empty car seat, that's it, I swear."
I look at him and try to decipher whether he's telling the truth or not. I give a small nod and he releases me.
"Aw shit" I hissed as I straightened up. I look down to realize there's blood on my hospital gown. "Hey, would you be a good mate and make yourself useful by getting me a needle and thread so I can stitch myself back together?" I ask in a fake sweet voice.
He rolls his tongue over his teeth before getting up and walking to the sink in my room and opening a cabinet above it to get a first aid kit. When he comes back I try to reach for the kit and he pulls it away.
"Lift up your hospital gown" he says as he sets the kit on the bed and starts rummaging through it.
"Hell no, I can stitch it up myself thank you very much" I exclaim as I continue to grab at the first aid kit.
"I know you can, can you just accept my help?" He says, his voice sounding exhausted.
I huff and slowly lift the bottom half of my dressing gown and lay back on the bed that's elevated to a sitting position. I'm glad they at least gave me some underwear so I'm not naked while he sews me back up. As he takes out the original stitches that were in already, I groan.
"Well if you hadn't been trying to fight, this wouldn't have happened" he grumbles.
"Oh shut up," I say through another groan as he pulls out the last bit of it.
He grabs a disinfectant wipe and wipes up the blood that came from him removing the stitches before starting to thread the thread back and forth between the two ends of skin. I look down at him and see just how focused he is and just huff. I cant believe this is happening.
He continues to work at stitching up my side, every so often looking up at me whenever I groan or hiss from the pain.
"You're taking this surprisingly well," he mumbles more to himself than to me as he stays focused on the needle and thread.
"I've seen a lot of needles in my life..." I say as I'm momentarily transported back to the lab with the people in white coats and the needles. Always the needles-
"Aeralyn, are you listening?" I hear someone say.
I snap out of my stupor and Landon is way too close to me, I scoot away from him as much as I can on the small hospital bed. After a moment, I realized that he asked me something. "What?" I ask.
"I said that I was finished with your stitches, and you need to rest" he says. He looks at me for a bit longer than I would have liked, maybe trying to read me again. I look down at my lap and realize that he put my dressing gown back down over the lower half of my body.
"Thanks" I say quietly. He stays silent at this and I ask a question to break the silence. "You know I never asked you how old you were," I ask as I mess with the bandage of my leg.
He doesn't look up at me as he starts putting the stuff back in the first aid kit. "32."
My eyes widened. "Really? I thought you'd be younger..." I mumble. He glances up at me for a split second and I know what he's asking without him saying anything. "20."
Suddenly I remember something from the accident. "Is Sawyer here too"
He nods. "Sleeping," he says quietly as he puts the first aid kit away, "he was worried about you. Even as they were putting him under he was just asking how you were and if you were okay."
I glance up at him as he cleans up the first aid kit and notice something in his expression close to resentment, but at what? I nod as I turn my head from him and take a look out the window to see snow falling and covering the ground. We are not in Spring. "Please explain to me why we are in your pack," I ask as turn back to look at him.
I look to Landon to see his dumbfounded expression. "You were bleeding out. I wasn't about to drive 2 hours all the way to your pack and risk you dying, so I brought you here. Do you have a problem with that? Would you rather me have left you out on the road and let you die?" he asks as he leans into me on the bed, his hands pressed into the hospital mattress beside me.
I glare at him and cross my arms across my chest. "No."
"Glad we can both agree on that. Now lay back and stop being a brat," he says as he pushes himself off the bed and walks over to the door, opens it, and then slams it behind him as he walks out.
For the rest of the evening I don't see Landon and I'm grateful to not have to talk or be near him. Shortly after he left so loudly, a nurse came in to put my IV back into my arm as well as my nasal oxygen mask back on my nose saying my oxygen levels were low. I blame Landon. As the night goes on I watch whatever is playing on the TV and wait for final check-ins for the night by the nurses.
As 10:30pm rolls around I make my move. Slowly getting out of my bed I test out putting weight on my leg and, after some stumbling and almost slipping and falling on my ass, I'm upright. I grab the bar that my drip IV bag is attached to and make my way to the door. I slowly open the door and poke my head out into the hallway, when I determine the coast is clean I make my way over to the nurses station. Quickly and quietly I skim through the papers laid out until my eyes land on a familiar name 'Sawyer Johnson. Rm#429.'
Perfect.
As quietly as I can, I make my way to Sawyer's room with the help of the room number arrows on the wall. In no time I'm in the hallway of his room, but I suddenly hear footsteps coming from the way I just came. I hobble-run the rest of the way to his room, open the door and slide inside just as I hear the person's footsteps at the end of the hallways. With my ear pressed to the door I wait until I hear those steps get fainter until I let out a deep breath.
"Well isn't this a surprise?"
