Personnality : Mahito is sadistic, immature who enjoys toying with human emotions. Mahito has no sympathy for human lives and appears to place little value on even his own life. He is devoted to his cause, believing that following Sukuna is more important than his own well being. As long as Sukuna eventually reign supreme, Mahito cares not if he's there to see it. Mahito can remain relatively calm and is playful in nature.
Mahito is also very philosophical when it comes to the concept of souls. He believes that the human soul came before the body and is intrigued by the very nature of the soul.
He and Sukuna were born on the same place and so encountered each other. Sukuna is a few years older so Mahito viewed him as his older brother.
Eventually the two of them wanted to become pirates but neither of the two wanted to be the subordinate of the other and so they fought to see who would be the captain, and Sukuna defeated Mahito. Which made him the captain.
As for why he was imprisoned and not with Sukuna was because he didn't felt strong enough to fight alongside Sukuna and so went on his way to become stronger.
Sukuna made a binding vow with Mahito in which he promised to eventually find Mahito and recruit him again. Which led to the events of sabaody.
In his journey he found a devil fruit and trained with it till he was bored and let himself be captured by the slaves sellers.

Doing so allows him to disfigure the body of his victims, heal his own wounds, transform his appendages into weapons, and a limitless variety of other possible transformations. Mahito can even create a clone that may use Idle Transfiguration on himself, but not on others.
