Gray thought it was strange when the caller ID on his phone said Kane. He worried something happened to Doyle. He answered. "K?"
He listened as the disguised voice implored him not to testify. The bastard referred to Doyle as his bitch. He made a fist ready to break something other than his jaw.
If he threatened him, he must have called Doyle as well. She answered immediately and confirmed the obvious.
Devin answered, "Don't tell me you're in more trouble."
"The SOB just contacted me and Doyle Kane."
"What the fuck? Are you sure it was him?"
"If not him, someone doing his dirty work. He threatened both of us if we testify."
"That's intimidating a witness. I have to call the prosecutor. I'm coming to you."
Gray wore sweats he put on after his workout and shower. He tied his shoes and raced out the door to get her.
Once back at his apartment, she paced like a caged animal. He wanted to hold her to calm her, but he was no calmer. He didn't want her to give Rock & Roll Magazine an interview, certainly not now. "You can never be too careful."
"I should be able to live my life without looking over my shoulder."
If it did not tie his guts in knots, he might point out that she had been sneaking around for months. It was an invasion for him to follow them on their special trip to the park. It had been magical.
A knock on his door caused her to jump. Devin strode in with purpose. He wasn't as big as Gray, but his commanding presence filled the room.
"You remember Doyle Kane."
He nodded. "Looks like you've healed. What's going on?"
Gray pointed to Doyle. "I think her call came first and then mine. The voice was fake, but he told us both not to testify or..." He looked at Doyle who nodded. "Or he would tell her family that she was my bitch. Sorry K."
She nodded. "He called me a whore."
"What does he have on you?"
Gray handed over his phone. He scrolled and looked up. "So you two are what? You look like highschool sweethearts, like..."
Gray silently pleaded, don't mention Beth.
Devin cleared his throat. "These are just cute pictures."
"Jesus, Dev. You know me. Do you really think Mr. Kane Properties wants me dating his daughter."
"But his daughter wants to date you."
Doyle stepped up. "He threatened to tell my family."
"Let me call someone who can get a message into the courtroom. Jury selection has started."
"What do we do?"
"You wait. Let us investigate. It goes without saying, cooperate. I'd like to stick around to see if he calls again."
"He's in court."
"I'm envisioning a very long recess and a meeting in the judge's chambers. Maybe he'll plead guilty."
"That would solve our problems." Doyle sat on the sofa after wearing out his floor. Gray sat next to her and took her hand.
Devin smirked and shook his head. Gray didn't have to guess what he was thinking. What happened to the womanizer? You haven't been this way since Beth.
"Man, you can't tell anyone."
Devin put his hands up. "I'm a professional. It explains why you're always blowing us off when we go out."
