The other two concerts were much the same. The rock group had more girls throwing themselves at the band members. The alternative fans were cool the way they dressed with hair dyed in bright colors and lots of cropped tops showing off pierced bellies, but they had the most respect for themselves and the band.
The plane was ready for them after the last concert. Doyle would have been happy to wait, but Baxter needed the plane and their pilot, Gavin, had to have the required rest in between.
As they boarded, Gray looked around. "This is nicer than Sinclairs'."
"Once we're in the air, we can sleep." She pointed to the bedroom.
His eyes grew large. "When are we going to talk about what comes next?"
Doyle groaned. "Do we have to?" He nodded. "Fine. We won't hide. If my mother disagrees, then I'll move out. That's what Baxter did, and he's the prince. It will be his house eventually, but he bought his own home."
Once the plane was in the air, she stood up. "Do you want to sleep?"
He shook his head. "It's like we'd be sleeping in your father's house."
She laughed. "We can just sleep. I'm going to the bedroom. Join me or not."
Doyle took off her boots, but kept her clothes on. It would be morning when they arrived in Boston. As she turned to get comfortable, Gray appeared. "Okay, but no funny business."
"I can handle it. Can you?"
He pulled her in his arms. "I'm tired. Thanks for letting me take care of you."
"I was perfectly safe."
He chuckled. "Maybe. Maybe not. One of those guys tonight was eyeing you like you were a juicy steak."
"Seriously?"
"He was drooling."
"Stop teasing."
He held her tight. "I'm not. You are so beautiful. Now go to sleep."
His words kept her awake, but his steady breathing lulled her under. She hoped her mother gave her an excuse to move out. She wanted to sleep with Gray.
When Doyle returned home, her father was alone in the dining room. He looked up from the paper and smiled.
"Hi daddy." She kissed his cheek.
"Did you sleep?" She nodded.
"Good."
"Daddy, you know I fell in love with Gray."
"The chauffeur."
"He's more than that. I found out something important."
He frowned. "I'm listening."
"I had the cross on when I was attacked. I didn't know, but in my sleep I had a dream and kissed him. Daddy, I don't just love him. He's my cross love."
"You can find another love. One that will give you a good life."
She felt like a cat with her back up. "Like you did, because you let Eleanor go."
He shook his head. "You don't understand."
"But I do. I don't want to cheat on my husband to be with the man I love. Times have changed. No one cares who I'm with. If they do it will blow over like my destructive behavior with the band. No one expects me to marry up or even my equal." I'm the drug-using party girl.
"The Hathorne boy."
"Is a nice guy who I met at a nightclub, but I don't love him. I love Gray."
"I thought you were over him."
