Chapter One

On the twenty-fourth of December when Evie turned seventeen, I had a weird feeling in my stomach. I was laying awake at five in the morning, I didn’t get out of bed though, I just lay staring up at the pink stars that I’d stuck onto my ceiling. After two hours of my daydreaming Evie burst in like I knew she would, she had a big grin her face but she didn’t say anything, just looked at me expectantly. I smiled; she had been waiting for this day for as far back as I could remember.

“Happy Birthday Evie!” I said with my arms open, she grinned and ran towards me and dived right at me. She fell right on me causing me to fall back and bash my head on the headboard.

“Ow! Bloody hell Evie!” I shouted giving her a playful shove. She fell, since when was she so weak?

“Ellie!” she pouted, then she smiled and stood up “Come on, let’s go for a walk.”

I scowled, Evie and her mental mind.

“But there’s ice all over the road!” I protested “I cannot walk on ice, you know that.” I crossed my arms and tried to look strong.

“Ellie Ellie Ellie, please just quit your moaning and get ready.” With that she grabbed my black jeans and pink top from my chair and threw them at me.

Normally I wouldn’t have given in to her at all, but events of my birthday crossed my mind and I let out a low groan and threw my duvet off. When I’d got one leg in my black jeans the door flung open again.

“Evie!” I yelled trying to quickly shove my other leg in.

“Great, you’re ready, come on then.” She reached for my arm and pulled, I quickly picked up my hoodie before closing the door.

“Shh,” she said turning around to glare at me when she heard the door shut.

“Wasn’t that loud,” I muttered rolling my eyes. We quietly padded down the stairs, Evie was an expert at this, she often sneaked out early in the morning. It wasn’t to do anything naughty like sneaking off to meet guys or stuff like that. No, Evie just liked to breathe in the fresh air and parade around the streets, sometimes she asked me to come but mostly she didn’t. I didn’t take it personally I knew that it wasn’t that she didn’t like my company because she did. I was the only one that she could actually stand to see every day and not get sick of them.

It had always been like that ever since I was born, and I liked it that way. When we got outside I realised just how freezing it was, it was then that I glanced at Evie and saw that she wasn't even wearing a cardigan or a hoodie.

“Evie aren’t you cold?” I asked wrapping my arms around myself.

She just shook her head at me and laughed “No of course not! I’m never cold, you know me.”

“Wait!” I called after her as she started walking. She turned and sighed, I just looked at her, she rolled her eyes and extended her arm.

“Here.” She said. I grabbed it and slowly walked forward. I really hate blasted ice.

The wind was absolutely ferocious that day, swishing my hair about all over the place.

“Evie, my hair is getting into such a mess.” I whined after about ten minutes of constantly brushing it out of my eyes.

“Ellie. Can you recall even one minute of moaning I did on your birthday? No I don’t think so.” She said trying to contain her annoyance.

“Yeah, but I didn’t make you do anything weird.” I pressed.
