RECAP

“You want help with that?” he asked gesturing to the suitcase. I glared at him, he knew very well that I had just spent the last fifteen minutes struggling with it.

“Well what do you think?” I snarled at him.

“Hey, hey, Ellie no need to be like that, cheer up we’re going on holiday,” he said coming forward, he poked my cheek as he went past me to close the black case.

“Hey!” I swatted his arm away and watched as he closed the case with ease.

“There!” he said “Shall I take it down for you?”

I nodded. “Okay then.”

It took over two and a half hours to arrive at the airport. I really hate the crowded atmosphere at the airport but I had to endure the pain silently.

In the plane I sat beside my father, I wanted the aisle seat and he wanted the window so it worked out fine. I stayed awake throughout the journey as did everyone else despite it being long ride. It was dark when we landed in Sydney, and that made our moods tired and sleepy, there wasn’t much talk amongst us when we hailed a cab to escort us to the hotel we were staying in.

I fell into a deep sleep as soon as I landed on the bed, but not before thinking that this was going to be a holiday I was not going to forget for a very long time. It was going to be very long and pain with Alex being with them and uncomfortable as they- her mother and father hadn’t been on a trip together since they had got divorced.

I was right on one of those accounts at least; that I would never forget that holiday in Sydney for a long time, if ever.

But it wasn’t for the reasons I had accounted for.

CHAPTER 5

On the first morning I was woken at seven sharp, by Evie gently shaking me.

“Ellie, come on its breakfast time.” She said. I looked at her and blinked was she my sister or my mother? , her choice of clothes looked rather ancient.

“What are you wearing?” I asked her unable to keep the distaste of her clothes out of my voice.

“We’re visiting an ancient town today.” She said pulling the pale blue cover off my body. “Get dressed; I’ll wait for you outside.”

I sighed and went over to my suitcase, no0one had told me about visiting an ancient old town, so I hadn’t packed any old rags.

I found a pair of light blue jeans that looked alright and a white top with some old flowery print on it. At the last minute I picked out a grey cardigan too, I hoped it would do.

“This okay?” I asked Evie as I stepped outside. She wasn’t waiting alone; she was standing with Alex with her hand enclosed in his. She looked up at the sound of my voice and nodded but she didn’t smile. I suddenly realised that I looked bigger than her almost, had it been that long since I had seen her that I hadn’t realised she’d lost weight, she was still taller by a few centimetres but it was weird. She caught me looking and smiled at me and grabbed my arm and linked it through hers.

“Come on then.”

After breakfast (which was thankfully nice) we head out, we were in a car that we had rented for the three weeks. The journey was quiet with everyone in their own thoughts, the car after a while had left the smooth ground and we were riding over rocks and pebbles.

“Ow,” I muttered as the car caused me to crash into the window.

“Sorry,” said my dad who was driving.
