"You have got to be fucking kidding me" Harry said outloud to the person who he was going to be spending the rest of the month with.
"That's not a very polite way to greet people"
The posh accent, the irritating sneer and those annoying grey eyes could only belong to one person. Harry turned to his boss who only stared back at him and sighed
"I have to work with Draco fucking Malfoy?" Harry said exasperated
After the war Harry went on to achieve his dream of being an Auror, battling dark magic and saving people was always something he'd been good at. He loved his job too, he enjoyed getting new cases, and being able to relieve people of their stresses was something he always looked forward to whenever he finished a case. And Harry had been on a roll, he was smashing case after case getting promotion after promotion, and finally he had gotten the opportunity to do a stake out at one of the most active sites for dark magic. He was ecstatic, thrilled even to be able to get this opportunity, and when his boss first told him, he already began imaging all kinds of different scenarios.
However there was something odd about doing this case though and that was the fact that for the first time since he was a trainee he had to work with someone else. Although Harry had always had a humble view of himself, he found it weird that he had to be assigned with someone else. He defeated one of the strongest dark wizards in history... did he really need a partner? His boss told him that for such an active site it was crucial that he had someone else who was very knowledgeable on dark arts. Harry was excited of course, he didn't really have any close work friends besides Ron and Hermoine, so he was excited with the possibility of meeting someone new. Chatting and getting to know someone whilst staking out one of the biggest dark magic sites? It sounded like a dream to Harry.
And it was a perfect dream, until he realised that the person he had to get along with, the person he had to stay with in a tiny little convertible tent, was Draco fucking Malfoy. For a month. Just the two of them. Alone.
And that's how Harry ended up here, looking between Draco and his boss, stammering and trying to wrap his head around just what the hell was happening.
"So you're saying that I have to stay with him? For an entire month?" Harry said bewildered.
Draco scoffed, rolling his eyes "Yes genius it's not that difficult"
Harry could already feel the irritation boiling in his gut but decided to ignore it.
Harry's boss just sighed staring at the both of them "Yes, Draco Malfoy has been assigned to you for this case due to the dangerous nature of the house " Harry's boss stated "It has a lot of traps, curses and spells and I don't doubt your skills Potter, but this isn't something you just do alone"
Harry scoffed at that.
"Once you guys stake that area for activity for around a month, it's also in your mission to go inside the house and see what you can find" Harry's boss then gestures to Malfoy "Which is why you have Malfoy to keep you company, He'll disarm all traps and spells whilst you go in for the big catch"
Harry just stared at his Boss, a small frown creasing his brow. He didn't like this. He didn't like this one bit. Harry turned over to look at Malfoy, trying to get some support in any way to see that this arrangement was stupid, but was only met with Malfoy looking down at the floor, showing zero emotions. That caused Harry to feel nauseous about this, he had a terribly bad feeling about this.
Harry's Boss just sighed "You don't have to take the case if you don't want to" he adds "I put you on this case because I knew you wanted something big like this, it's up to you whether to take it or not"
Harry stared at his Boss, and when he turned to look at Malfoy again, he was surprised to find him staring back. Harry couldn't tell what Malfoy was thinking, his gaze piercing through him, expectant. Harry's heart quickened, he felt as if Malfoy was challenging him, seemingly asking are you really going to back out?. With that Harry breathed in, the stubborn and prideful part of Harry not backing down
"When do we start?" Harry said never taking his eyes off Malfoy.
Malfoy was the first to look away and then eventually Harry too, who was now staring at the thankful eyes of his Boss "You start tomorrow afternoon, transportation, foods, toiletries- everything will be provided, you only need to pack your clothes"
Harry nodded, his heart still thrumming in his chest with nerves as he watched his Boss walk away with a smile on his face. Harry couldn't believe this was happening, and he pinched the bridge of his nose with a small sigh, trying to think about how he was even going to go about this. He then heard a slight cough from the side of him and Harry turned to look at Malfoy who was still looking at the floor.
"Well" Malfoy stated, smoothing out his suit "It's reassuring to know that Harry Potter still never backs down from a challenge"
Harry just stared at him, a bit proud that he was right about it being a challenge "Yeah well, it seems fun" Harry mumbles, not really sure what to do and clears his throat "Well I look forward to working with you?"
The way that Harry had said that sentence in a question-like tone made Harry want to shoot himself and Mafloys confused reaction didn't make Harry's suicidal thoughts any better.
Malfoy just stared at him, no smile, pursing his lips in a way that made it seem like if he did smile it would be a sin. Instead he just gave Harry a slight nod, "I look forward to working with you too" he said before walking away with a swift turn.

Harry then went home, entering his house with a heavy sigh. He knew that he needed to pack, but there was simply just too much on his mind right now. He felt out of place, distant from everything and anything. From some of his colleagues, Malfoy had been regarded as more quiet these days, never saying anything, never doing anything. With that information Harry knew, deep down that spending a month with Malfoy wouldn't be that bad. All he had to do was keep to himself like they have both been doing whenever they pass each other at work.
It didn't erase the fact however, that it was infuriating however. After Malfoy's trial, during a celebration dinner of an old classmate of Harry's, many of Harry's close friends talked and laughed about the letters Malfoy had sent them. And that entire time they were laughing and reciting what the letter's had said, Harry was overcome with an alarming sense of sadness, frustration, longing when he realised that everyone at that table got letters from Malfoy but him.
And out of all people why didn't Harry get one? Harry kinda saved Malfoys ass numerous times, and sure Malfoy definitely saved Harry's once or twice- but seriously? After all this time, Malfoy did not once consider to even send Harry a letter? Harry remembers just feeling shit for the rest of that night, going over those horrid years of his life trying to find a reason for the lack of effort. He remembered staring into his glass of beer, and then standing up, discreetly dismissing himself and walked out of that dinner and never came back.
Which was boggling to Harry, like why on earth did he genuinely give two shits about some old highschool rival not giving him an apology? Was Harry really going to get petty over something like this?
Yes he was.
And that's the stance that Harry's been taking this entire time. Although Harry didn't obsess over something like this, it definitely still lingered in the back of his mind, because come on, didn't it make sense? All those years of being at war with each other he never thought to make peace? Sure it's not like Harry was trying to make peace either, but did he want to? it's not like Harry was the one that was being an ass that entire time.
Harry sighed to himself yet again, and he felt like he was going to be doing that alot in the next coming days as he walked up into his room, and begrudgingly began to start packing. It's just a month after all, it wouldn't be that bad... right?
A/N: Gahhh!! I hope you like it, it's been a while huh ;-;
