Chapter 6: He's alive?

We all peaked out from behind our spots. Naruto pointed out our target, keeping his voice in a not-so-hushed whisper.

"Over there!"

The four of us dashed behind trees as Kakashi Sensei's voice sounded over our radios.

"What's your distance from the target?"

"Five metres." Naruto responded. "I'm ready, just give the signal."

"I'm ready too." Sasuke whispered.

"So am I." Sakura agreed.

"Ready." I said in a hushed tone.

"Okayyy... now!" Sensei ordered.

All four of us jumped out of our hiding spots and dashed for the cat. Naruto managed to grab it around the torso, and it started scratching at him. Sakura just looked at the cat like he was the cutest thing in the world.

"Can you identify a ribbon on the right ear?" Sensei asked.

"Affirmative. We've got a positive ID." Sasuke confirmed.

"Right. Lost pet, Tora, captured. Mission accomplished." As Kakashi Sensei confirmed that our mission was over, I walked over to Naruto and picked up Tora. The cat seemed to calm down pretty quickly now that it was away from the thrashing Naruto.

"CAN'T WE GET A BETTER MISSION THAN THIS!? I HATE CATS!" Naruto screamed over his mic.

When we returned the cat to its owner, the woman instantly snatched Tora from my arms and started smothering her with a big hug. I swear, I could see tears streaming down Tora's fuzzy face. Honestly, I would've run away too.

"Now, then." The Hokage started, pulling me out of my thoughts again. "For Squad Seven's next mission, we have several available tasks. Huh? Among them babysitting the chief councillor's three-year-old, helping his wife to do the shopping, digging up potatoes, and-"

"No!" Naruto yelled. He crossed his arms in a big X above his head. "I wanna go on a real mission! Something challenging and exciting, not this little kid stuff! Come on old man!"

Although I was mildly uncomfortable with Naruto's outburst like this in front of the Hokage, I had to agree with him. I was getting a bit sick of doing chores for the village. Iruka Sensei stood up and placed his hands on the desk.

"How dare you!" He screamed. "You're just a brand new Genin with no experience! Like everyone else, you start with simple missions to develop your skills and prove yourself!"

"Are you serious!? Babysitting is not a mission, it's just as stupid- wah!" Naruto argued, cutting himself off when Kakashi Sensei punched him on the head.

"Will you put a lid on it?"

"Naruto." The Hokage spoke. "It seems you do not understand the tasks you have been given." Naruto cut off his groaning and looked at the Hokage, confused. "Listen, many kinds of requests come into our village every day. From babysitting to assassinations. These requests are carefully recorded, analysed, then ranked; A, B, C, or D depending on their difficulty. We Ninja are also ranked by ability, Hokage at the top, Jounin, Chunin, and Genin at the bottom. At the highest level, we select the missions and assign them to the Ninja who have the appropriate skill and experience. And, if the mission is successful, we receive a fee that supports our village, and our work. Since you are untried Genin, just starting down the shinobi path, you are given D level- hm?"

The Hokage looked up and stopped. We were all sitting in a circle, listening to Naruto talk.

"So I had this tonkatsu ramen yesterday, and I'm thinking miso ramen today-"
