Emma was dreading the call she knew she would be receiving today. Her phone would ring, Cleo's face appearing on the screen, and Emma would have to answer. She knew every word the call would contain but the only question that remained about it was When?
Lewis and Emma had gone out to Mako island to gather information about their "problem" or whatever you wanted to call it. The three friends, Cleo, Emma, and Rikki, had been transformed weeks ago into what they believed were mermaids. The slightest drop of water on their skin caused a tail, weighing tons, to grow in place of their legs. The girls were absolutely horrified when this happened because of the absurdity it carried and the inevitability that they would be caught with tails by people who were not as accepting as Lewis.
Now Lewis and Emma were just off the shore of Mako Island exploring the waters for any sign of abnormality or "mermaidness" they could find, for this was the place the magic of the tails took place. Emma was under the sea while Lewis was reading up on mythical creatures in the safety of his boat when he heard the ring of Emma's phone. He answered it and the person on the other line asked for the mermaid who was still underwater. Lewis held the phone above the sea in expectation.
Emma broke the surface of the water as Lewis announced, "It's for you."
When she put the phone to her ear, Cleo had already begun speaking, "So have you decided what time for the party tonight?"
Emma sighed and said she was still unsure about whether it was going to happen or not. With all of the changes in her life recently, she didn't exactly feel ready for a party with a bunch of swimmer girls who she hadn't seen since she quit the swim team for obvious personal reasons. In addition, it was a sleepover party so there was even more time for something to go terribly wrong.
Cleo pressed on, stating that it was a tradition and they must continue it if they want to be normal fifteen year old girls.
"Hey, where are you today, anyway?" Asked Emma.
"My new job," Cleo said, hesitating before the next part, "at the Marine Park."
Emma's mouth fell open before she announced the news to Lewis who looked just as shocked. "I do remember that there happens to be a lot of water at the Marine Park." Emma remarked.
"Yes, the tank is full of water but I'm not going to let that run my life."
Just then, Cleo's boss walked into the room she was working in. Changing the subject back to the original one, she said, "Look, Emma, I really wanna make this party happen–I'vegottagocallyoulater," and hung up.
Emma pulled the phone away from her ear, her brows furrowed and her mind occupied. She didn't listen to Lewis as he stammered on about Cleo and the Marine Park, instead she worried about the sleepover which she would do anything to get out of.
The conversation shifted back to what they came to Mako Island for; answers. They wanted to know how and why they transformed and any additional information about it.
Emma said, "There's only one place we'll find answers to why we became mermaids," she paused, gesturing to the dormant volcano on the island, "that's where it happened," which they were all sure about.
Emma left Lewis to explore on her own as he mumbled to himself about how it's a bad idea to go alone.
As she swam toward the entrance of the cave, she took in the beauty of the sea and its creatures who acted as her mutuals. They were not afraid of her and she was not afraid of them. They were all inside of this mesmerizing ocean and all a part of it and she found that perfect in itself. She felt at home.
Something glistening in the sand took Emma's focus away from the charm of the ocean and she swam down to investigate the thing. She carefully removed it from the sand and realized it was a necklace, no, a locket. A beautiful locket.
