PART ONE: THE FIRST GAME
Sophie Easton: "Yeah, well, my parents raised me to be a deadly weapon."
Clove Kentwell: "My 'princess' is smarter than you, that's why she's my ally."
Ophelia: "They don't want her to win, they want you. You're the star of the show."
Chase Nelson: "Isn't it so pretty?
All of those stars lighting up the sky..."Katniss Everdeen: "I promised Prim that I'd win for her!"
Peeta Mellark: "Don't give up..."
Let's start this, shall we?
I ran my fingers through my curls. Tomorrow is the reaping. I thought to myself. My mom sat down at the table across from me. "You remember what to do if you get picked?"
"Run as fast as I can, I'm small and swift. Grab a knife vest and head to shelter. Or if I get allies follow them." I recited from being told for so many years straight.
"Very well, you have to make sure you look out for your competition." She told me in a wary tone.
I nodded. "I know, you guys have been teaching me how to throw knives since I was 11."
"We have, Sophie." "Exactly, I have a year advantage on the careers." "They have better training than you. We can only teach you so much in District 3."
"Don't say picked..." I muttered. "Pardon?" "You can just say reaped, I'm 16 years old. C'mon." My mom ignored this and looked around. "Plus, it's not like a sacred word or something!"
My mom stood up. "Dinner is almost done, go get Iris and Mike." She while dusting herself off. I couldn't tell if she doubted my survival or not.
I turned around and left the table. I walked over to the stairs. As I stepped up one step at a time I held onto the railing. Once I reached the second floor I called out, "Dinner is ready!"
I saw Mike immediately dash out of his room. "Don't forget to wash your hands, Mike." "I know!" My younger brother darted back at me.
I rolled my eyes at him. I turned around and started stepping down the stairs with him following.
I looked at the table. Beef stew and some bread. One of the richest meals we could get. I mean, we did live on the richer side of District 3.
I walked into the bathroom to wash my hands then sat down at the table.
"I feel like someone might bring pride to our district this year!" My mom nudged me. My dad smiled at her.
"If she can make it past the girls." Iris spoke. "Iris Hope Easton! This is not the time!" I bit the inside of my mouth.
"Just sayin'." She said with a shrug. I dishes up my food quietly. Mike looked around before eventually dishing up too.
My mom continued to scold Iris. "At least she could survive in the hunger games longer than you!"
Mike turned to me. "Are you scared?" "Everything inside of me is telling me to fear the worst." I whispered to him.
Mike was 14. I was 16. We weren't too fare apart in age.
I ate a spoonful of the stew. I stared at my mom who kept giving glanced to Iris.
"Our daughter, Sophie!" She exclaimed. "Oh, you'd do amazing!" "Why are you wishing I get reaped?" "You're a deadly weapon, you could bring pride to our district." I looked over at my dad. He finally seemed to notice what was wrong about my mom hoping I was reaped. I noticed his smile slowly fade away.
I looked around. Mike was shivering and Iris rolled her eyes. My mom was bursting with excitement though.
I bit into my bread. Something came over me and I quickly gobbled down my whole meal.
"I'm gonna head up to my room." I told my family.
