"Now make sure you hold your head up high, don't let anyone get to you. I won't leave your side, and I will handle anyone who approaches us. Got it?" I stared at him admiringly and nodded. He smirked and squeezed my hand gently, the warm tingle still lingered in his touch "That's my girl." He moved my hand up and wrapped it into his arm fold. We walked into the ballroom exactly as the bell tolled 5 times. Students around us stared at us with big smiles on their faces, I guess to get a look at the new students. Well all but one group, I should say. Godfrey leaned against a wall with a group glaring at us. Next to him there was a girl with long red curls flowing out of a butterfly clip. I could see her pointed ears sticking out from the locks framing her face. Fae. She wore a flowing green gown with a look of disgust on her face. "Don't worry that's just Cassia, she may be royal but her family's not as high as yours. She's jealous." He whispered next to my ear snidely, "I told you, the royals are rude and cruel. But most of them are just envious and that's what makes them act such a way." He stopped me in front of the buffet table, "Hungry?" I shook my head, there was no way I could eat right now. My stomach was more knotted than the braids my mother used to put in my hair. "How about some champagne then?" He took a glass from the table and held it out to me, I shook my head again.
"I've never drank before." I whispered glancing at the floor. He tucked his hand under my chin, the warm buzz lingered again. He lifted my face to his and whispered so close to my mouth.
"Well Merah, I told you I'd show you a real ball. I'm not gonna start lying now." His warm breath so close to my mouth made me want to kiss him, I'd read about love and kissing but I never thought I would want to kiss a boy.I looked into his eyes and all I could see was longing, which is exactly how I felt. I closed my eyes and quickly leaned my face closer to his. I had to know, I had to feel, to understand. He didn't hesitate when my mouth reached his, he slipped his other hand that wasn't holding my chin into my hair at the back of my neck and kissed me deeply. It was intoxicating, and breathtaking. His mouth parted just a little and I felt his tongue push into mine and gently brush it. He tasted floral like, almost like a tea I would brew from the flowers in my mother's garden. "Well, I didn't expect this." Godfrey's voice sneered from behind me, quickly pulling me back to reality. Leon quickly released me and glanced towards him.
"Not enjoying Cassia's company brother? Had to find someone's else's happiness to ruin?" Leon spit back at him.
"No, we were just discussing how the next eldest Ashford son was written to marry the next Flax daughter." Marry? One of them has to marry a fae? This young? Was Leon the eldest? Did I just get myself into a triangle?
"Being twins, I don't think 2 minutes makes me older than you. Since I received my mark today, it isn't my duty to marry Cassia." I stared at him puzzled, but he never looked at me, only at Godfrey. And then he lifted his hand and pulled down his sleeve revealing a bold calligraphy M on his wrist. Sniggering erupted from behind me, I turned to find the glaring group from before at my backside.
"You may have that, but does she?" Cassia eyed me, scornfully I might add. What were they talking about? I lost what was going on after the letter, what did the letter mean? Leon gently caressed my wrist and flipped it towards him, and there I saw.. The same Bold Calligraphy written as an L. What did this mean?? I turned back towards the group and Cassia stared at me shellshocked, but she said nothing. Finally she turned and booked it out of the room.
"Now look what you've done.." Godfrey grudgingly said as he turned to chase after her. Their group dispersed after them, leaving just the two of us. Well at least that was over.I couldn't stop staring at my wrist now tho, what did this little letter mean? Leon didn't try to move away from me, he just watched me like a statue frozen there. I don't even think he was breathing at this point. "Can you explain to me what this is?" I murmured out.
"I don't want to scare you off.. how about we take some champagne and find somewhere private to talk?" He pleaded, taking a bottle of champagne in one hand and my hand in another. He steered me up to the fifth floor towards my room. How did he know where my room was? When we got to the end of the floor he didn't end up going to my door, he opened the door across from mine. I realized now there was an LA marked on this door. I guess I didn't even question where or who the other royals were earlier. All I knew was we were all on the fifth floor, and I booked it out of here just as quickly as I arrived up here. Inside was similar to my rooms entrance(stairs, nook, and a door below the stairs). He led me up to the top of the stairs. His bedroom was almost the same as mine, except every piece of furniture was black and dark grey. His bedding looked a silver silk in the dark moonlight. "Ignis" he whispered, and every candle in the room lit instantly. In the distance I seen a door next to his dresser.
"What's that?" I pointed towards it. He walked us towards the door and released my hand to turn the handle.
"Huh, a terrace." He laughed like it was the funniest thing he had ever seen. He moved forward and sat, his legs falling around the bars for the fencing. He set the bottle of champagne next to him and patted the ground for me to sit. "Join me please." He pleaded, his eyes begged for me. He was so mesmerizing in the moon light, I didn't want to leave him.
"You already brought me all the way up here, what makes you think I'd run away now? You also still haven't told me about these letters." He snorted at that.
"You really do know how to use your words, huh?" I rolled my eyes and slipped down onto the cool stone next to him, crossing my legs beside him in the bars.
"My mother always said a queen without a voice wasn't meant to rule." He snorted again, grabbing and gently rubbing my hand on my lap.
"She isn't wrong you know. Although, she has a funny way of showing it keeping you locked away from everyone." I looked at him solemnly, he was right. She never listened to my voice, and never brought me out into the world to see what it was I'd be ruling.
"So about these marks.." I whispered tearing my eyes away from him and stealing a glance at the hand he was holding. L was what I got, an L for Leon. And he had received an M, a big bold M for Merah. What did it mean?"Earlier when I shook your hand I felt something.. But it wasn't just then, I felt it again when I touched your face, and back. Worse when I kissed your head. I didn't understand it. But when we were sitting by the falls I seen something on my wrist and thought, it couldn't be.. Those are just old legends. But I was wrong. You see, in old times magical breeds intertwined.. they often mated with those different from them to keep the Magik flowing. But it's been centuries since it's happened, the war stopped everyone from mingling with those that weren't their own kind. That's why they formed treaty's, like the one that said someone from my family had to marry a Flax fae. That way one family doesn't die off from loss of Magik. But this." He said holding up our hands, his right and my left. "This is a mark of the mated, like from centuries ago. This is proof that the war destroyed everyone's destiny. You are my destiny Merah.. when I seen you running to the greenhouse I knew, I felt something shift in me and pull me to you. It didn't look like you wanted to be bothered, and I didn't want to startle you.. that's why I shifted into my raven form." He laughed and stared at our hands, unclasping our hands to run his fingers down my wrist. "I know it's strange, we're young.. but for some reason we were marked. I don't understand it anymore than you do, I just know what I've read. It's been centuries since it's happened, so somehow this is important."
