That night, Vera had spent the entire time tossing and turning, thinking only of Treech and how she'd hurt him. Of course, she knew that it was for the better, but that didn't stop her heart from aching every time she remembered the look of betrayal on his face.
And the next morning wasn't any better. Especially not when Coryo showed up at her door unexpectedly.
"What are you doing here?" Vera asked as she opened her bedroom door to find her best friend standing on the other side.
"Your mom phoned me. She said you haven't left your room all morning and she was worried you'd be late to the games," Coryo admitted, examining Vera's messy presence.
"It's not like I can really miss it," Vera replied with a sigh as she backed away from the door and took a seat by her desk. Coryo quickly followed behind, examining her room as if he hadn't been there plenty of times before.
"What happened last night?" asked Coryo, noting her bloodshot eyes. Vera went silent for a moment, wondering whether or not she could trust Coryo not to tell anyone else. But then again, she knew it would be better to get it off her chest and Coryo was her best friend after all.
"Treech told me he loved me," Vera admitted, looking down at her lap as she spoke, "And I walked away from him. And now he hates me."
Coryo went silent for a moment, as he watched his friend fight back the tears in her eyes before letting out a sigh.
"But isn't that what you wanted?" asked Coryo, "For him to stop loving you?"
"It wasn't his love that I didn't want," mumbled Vera, "I wanted him to focus on the games without worrying about what I thought."
"I don't think you can have it both ways, Vera," Coryo spoke with force, standing up taller, "You chose to save him by leaving him behind. So save him. Help him in that arena. And don't waste your energy regretting your choice."
And while his words may have been harsh, Vera knew he was right. She made her choice -- the right choice at that -- and there was no going back on it. Especially now, when Treech was most likely already on his way to the arena.
All that was left for her to do was send him gifts and pray that he made it through the night. And she couldn't do that if she didn't get to the auditorium on time.
