It was a rainy day in New York, perfect for Hades. He loved rainy days because they made everything look so pretty and reminded him of home. He wandered down the sidewalk in the city, searching for his favorite coffee shop, but couldn't find it. He then turned around and began to walk in the other direction. The city confuses him sometimes. Maybe it was all the lights and billboards?
He looked for only a moment, and when he looked up he saw a young woman sprinting toward him with her head down, her hands guarding her face. It was too late for him to say anything. She crashed right into him, knocking him down and falling onto him. He didn't say anything, he just helped the frightened woman up to her feet.
"I am so very sorry, mister!" the girl cried
"Don't worry about it," Hades said. "Are you alright?"
Before he could even finish his question, she looked at him and began to walk away. Hades shook his head and sighed. It's New York, there will always be those kinds of people... he thought as he watched her walk off. He dusted his coat off and continued on his way to the coffee shop. He walked for another few minutes before finally finding the right place.
When he shuffled into the shop, wiping his feet on the door, he was greeted by the smell of coffee beans and fresh vanilla. It was the best smell ever, and it made him hungry. He hadn't eaten that day and it got to him. He then made his way over to the counter where he told the cashier his order. He ordered a black coffee with room for cream and sugar. He also ordered a chocolate donut. He told them his name and then walked off to the side to wait for his food. Hades was a very patient person when it came to restaurants, so he had no problem waiting.
He left after receiving his food. Looking around, he saw a bench. Which he then decided to sit down on and watch the rain while he ate. The bench was too comfortable, but he wasn't going to complain too much. Once he finished his food, he threw the wrappers and cup away and started walking again.
On his way down the street, he saw that same woman. She was sitting on a bench, tapping her foot and playing with her hair. Hades watched, hesitating for a moment before finally sitting down next to her.
"Miss, are you alright?" he asked
The woman finally looked at him.
"Yes," she said, her voice almost sounded flat. "I'm fine."
"Do you need help?"
The silence was deafening. It was clear that she needed help. It frustrated him though. He couldn't help if she didn't tell him what was wrong. But then and again, he was a complete stranger to her. But she looked back down at her fingers, picking at the skin around her nails before nodding.
"Alright," he thought for a moment. "Well let's start with this. My name is Hades, how about you?"
"Helen... no... sorry it's Emily." she said, just loud enough for him to hear"Your real name." he demanded
"Persephone."
