Finally, after years of pain and stress, you had the chance to go to space! This had been your life's dream ever since you were a child, where the stars and moon seemed like worlds away. Now it was real, and the spaceship you were in was only a hop, skip and jump away from the moon.
You had been on the ship for three days now, yet the vast expanse of the void never ceased to amaze you. You had also become quite acquainted with your crew-mates: there were seven of you altogether and you each had your own coloured suit. Luckily, they let you pick your favourite colour.
Currently, the seven of you were sitting in the cafeteria and discussing your respective tasks for the day. Red was your leader, since they had decades of experience under their belt, and listed off each member's tasks.
When he got to you, you internally groaned at the prospect of fixing the wires in Electrical. It wasn't necessarily a difficult task, but the room always gave you the shivers. It forever had black-outs and there were always weird noises coming from the vents near the back. You shuddered at the mere thought of stepping into the room - alone, might you add.
After some more announcements, Red set you all off and you began making the familiar route to Admin, where you needed to swipe your card. The first couple of days was bewildering, and you had no idea how to handle the card reader.
Luckily, Black had stepped in and showed you the ropes. He offered to help you anytime you struggled with not just the card task, but the others too, so you took him up on his offer a couple of times. You didn't ask for help anymore though; you didn't want to seem like you were using him.
Today, Green and Blue were also swiping their cards, and they were failing miserably. "Dammit! I thought the captain said he fixed the card reader? Why is it still bugging out?" Blue groaned as she continued swiping, but to no avail.
"It's all in the wrist movement Lucy," Green replied in a gentler tone, and pushed Lucy out of the way. "Here, like this." Green swiped their card and like magic, the card reader also turned green. Lucy stood there, and if she wasn't wearing a helmet, you'd assume that her jaw was slack.
"Oh, come on! That's not fair!" Blue threw her arms up in desperation, and that's when she noticed you. "Oh! Y/N, are you swiping your card too?"
You nodded and walked up to them. "This one's always a tricky one though." But you found yourself eating your words as, you too, swiped your card on the very first try.
Now Blue had turned her head towards you, and you could picture an unamused expression on her face.Stifling a laugh, you wished Lucy good luck before sauntering out of the room. You had four other tasks left, and in your mission to prolong the Electrical task, you decided to throw away the trash. As you strolled down the hallways, you traced a hand along the cool, metal wall.
Being on the ship still didn't feel real, and you were going to savour every moment.Just as you rounded the corner to the trash chute, you saw it. Well, you smelt it first. A strong metallic smell weaselled its way into your helmet and drifted to your nose. You brought a hand to your mouth but inched closer to the source of the stench anyway.
And then you paused.Against the backdrop of the beige tiles, was a brilliant splash of red. Bright red. This was fresh blood, blood that came from a human. Said human was lying in a pool of their own blood, in a crooked angle, and certainly very dead.
