"Dying Breath"

— ♡ —

Every year, the kingdom would celebrate a day known as the Homecoming Day. The reason for it was unknown, but the king would encourage his citizens to feast all day and party all night. Of course, those in the palace and were close to the king knew the real reason...

...Years ago, on a stormy and gloomy night, the king and his beloved daughter were seated at the dining table and eating dinner. You sat in your usual seat and kicked your legs while attacking a leg of lamb.

"Papa, what did you do today?" you asked once you noticed that he had finished eating.

He sipped his wine - which he swore to his daughter that it was water, even though the liquid was suspiciously dark according to the girl - before beaming down at you. "Well, my sweet, I had to go to lots of meetings."

You groaned at the prospect of your father's meetings. As a five-year-old, you had not yet attended anything of the sort, but you knew that they meant that your father was gone for long periods of time, and were therefore boring. "Another meeting? How many do you have in a day?"

"Too many to count, my darling," your father laughed. As the pair chatted between themselves, the king's personal assistant hurried into the room.

"Pardon my entrance, your Majesty," the lanky man panted. "But there is an urgent matter you must attend to." Sensing the seriousness in his assistant's voice, the king stood up swiftly and headed towards the door. As he took large strides towards the other man, he paused and turned on his heel, which squeaked against the recently-waxed parquet.

"Y/N, my dear," the king said. "Come with me."

You hopped off your chair and dashed up to your father without hesitation, before slipping your hand into his and marching out of the hall. After a couple of twists and turns, you realized where the assistant was taking you both: the drawing room.

"What is the matter here?" the king announced in his booming voice once they had reached their destination. A crowd of guards, servants and other advisors alike were huddled around something. You tiptoed, but your view was mostly obscured by your father's velvet robes.

"Your Majesty!" a knight quickly ran up to your father and bowed on his knee. "We found a child abandoned on the steps of the palace. He is in a critical condition."

The king wasted no time in bounding up to this mystery child, who had been laid out on one of the chaise lounges, and assessed his form. A boy, no older than his daughter's age, was shrivelled up in a fetus position, and looked sickly pale. He noticed the child shiver, even under all the layers of blankets that some maids had covered him with, before placing the back of his hand against his forehead. The child had contracted some sort of fever from being exposed to the cold outside. Perhaps it was pneumonia?

You watched your father touch the mystery boy's forehead, before hearing him click his tongue. You then craned your head to get a closer look, but you could only make out the boy's shaggy, dark hair and blue lips. Strange. Was this a boy or an alien?

The king decided to keep the boy in his care that night. Once the child made a full recovery, which was guaranteed due to the king having the kingdom's best doctors at his disposal, he was interrogated.
The boy didn't have a name, nor any family. They weren't even sure if he could speak, as his vocal cords had practically been ripped out by his illness, but he did - albeit with a cracked tone.

The king decided to keep this child as one of his own, and named him Ares.

Ares was the same age as Y/N, and since the young princess had always been sheltered, the two spent practically all their time together. It was Y/N who helped Ares try new foods for the first time; it was Y/N who taught him how to play games, both imaginary and physical; and it was Y/N who was the first person to make Ares smile.
