The kingdom was approaching its eleventh Homecoming Day. Unfortunately in the past few years, your kingdom had been caught in a horrid predicament and a war had broken out with some other neighbouring territories. Homecoming Days hadn't been fun for the longest time.
But that was all about to change. It was on the second day of your school-break. You were sipping some rose tea and nibbling biscuits with Syra, when a frantic servant entered the parlour. "Your Highness!" they squeaked as they dropped to their knees. "Please follow me! It's urgent!"
Within a blink, both you and Syra hurried behind the servant, following them to the entrance of the palace. 'Just what is going on? Is there a surprise visit I'm unaware about?' The servant's steps faltered as the three of you approached the palace entrance. Finally, they bowed deeply and said: "His Royal Majesty has recieved news that we have won the war. Furthermore, His Royal Army are due to return before sunset."
At that, your heart combusted. Was what he was really speaking the truth? You questioned him through shaky breaths but the servant was adamant. Then, the door opened and your father from materialised behind it. The servant and Syra bowed in his presence, but the king was only focused on his daughter.
"My darling princess," your father beamed with opened arms, before coughing behind a silk handkerchief. You ran up to his arms and embraced him, feeling your mouth quiver.
"Is it true? H-have we really won?" Your father said nothing as he slowly nodded and stroked your hair. "It's all over?"
"It's all over," he said, before planting a kiss to your forehead. Tears flowed freely from your eyes as you hugged your father again.
It was all over.
Gone were the days of lockdowns at school, or not being able to trust your dorm-mates and friends from other kingdoms. Friends.
That reminded you.
You hadn't seen Ares in years. In his early teenage years, shortly after you had fallen into the blackberry bush, he had gone to join the army and fight for the kingdom. Between the very few home visits you were granted, Ares was never there.
You missed him so, so much. You were also nervous. Had he changed much? What was fighting in the war like? Did he still hold you in such close regard, as you did him?
You didn't want to dwell too much on that last thought.
A melody from the royal trumpeters sounded and suddenly the large, oak doors opened to reveal the front court.
Already an impressive ensemble of the royal guard stood on all four sides, only awaiting the command of your father. He greeted the loyal masses before whispering something in an advisor's ear. That led to a chain reaction of a guard opening the front gate, which slowly lifted with a grating noise, and revealed an even larger crowd. These, however, were your glorious victors, returning home from war. They rode forward on their steeds until they were about a few yards from the front steps of the palace. Squinting through the sunlight, you tried to pinpoint a familiar face.
