Sunrise

The sunrises on a brand new day

And yet I sleep, in dreamland I stay.

I've never been one to call it rest,

For in my dreams my trauma nests.

I see a girl so young and sweet,

Whose fears and nightmares become an armed fleet.

Each time she speaks her mother weeps,

And away in her tears, the truth does sweep.

I see a woman, so battered and bruised,

She cannot see her daughter's truth.

She cannot see all of the pain,

All of the scars, she herself has lain.

I see a girl who's face stings with each hit,

A girl who wonders "why won't mommy love me yet?"

As the sun rises above the land

She dreams about the raising of mommy's hand.

The falling that stings, the words that cut,

And the sunlight dances on her eyes, still shut.

When her eyes do open,

The memories fade into oblivion.

The girl can't believe that this is real,

She loves me, she loves me, and the sunrise does heal.
