"Wren wake up", mom yells.
"No", I say.
She starts shaking me trying to get me up. This is a routine for us. I throw the pillow over my head ignoring her.

"Wren Donner get up right now", she yells at me.
"I'm up", I yell back opening my eyes.
"You have 10 minutes until the shop opens."

My family owns a meat shop. We raise animals and slaughter them for food. Not a lot of people can afford our meat, so we usually trade things around.

I hear her walk out of the room. I roll out of bed and walk over to my dresser and pull out some old ripped jeans, a green button up, and my lace up boots.
Messing with my curly hair is always fun to wake up to. I don't feel like messing with it so I throw it up in a ponytail.

I go downstairs and out the door. The shop is in town so it's a good 5 minute walk. I might be able to make it if I run fast enough.

I start sprinting down the graveled road. People stare at me like I'm crazy and others ignore me. They have other things to be worrying about instead of a crazy running girl. I have walked/run through district 12 everyday, yet I still can't use to the chaos that I see. Starving people, orphaned children, and the fight over food I occasionally see.

I finally make it to the shop and I run in as fast as I can.

My mom is waiting for me at the front door.

"You are 10 minutes late", she says angry.

She throws me a bucket. "Go help your sister feed the animals."

I walk through the kitchen and out the back door. All the animals live together in a crowded fenced in yard. It's not much, but they have to live with it.

Librae is filling her bucket up with some chicken feed. I walk towards her and I fill mine with pig feed.

"Good morning", she beams.

I smile at her and I walk to the pigs and feel their feeder up.

"Wren I need you to bring me a pig", my dad yells.

I jump the fence and I throw a pig over my shoulder. I struggle to get it in the kitchen, but I get it in there. I set it on the wooden table. The next part is too gruesome for me and I have to leave.

When you think about it, the pig is us. It's raised in crappy conditions and raised for slaughter. It's exactly like us.

I go up front with mom. "I need you to watch the counter for me", she says," I have to go to the Hob and get some food." I nod and she leaves.

When she leaves someone comes in. I look up to see the Mayor's son ,Jempson, standing there.

"Hey meat girl", he says. All my friends call me this. He's actually the one who started it.

"Hey rich boy", I say, "how can I help you."

He glares at me. He hates that nickname so much.

"My father told me to come and pick up an order."

I take out the notebook that we keep our orders on and I find their name.

"You ordered 10 pounds of chicken", I question him.

He shrugs, "Were planning on eating a big dinner tonight because of the reaping tomorrow."

I forgot about the reaping being tomorrow. It came faster than I thought.

I give him a nod and I go to the back and pick up the box of meat. I kick the door open and I come and sit it on the counter.

"That will be 12-"

He already has the payment on the counter. I take it and put it in our money jar.

He picks up the box like it's air and walks out with it.

Not too many people came after he left. When mom comes we close up the shop. We walk down the road to our house. I look over at mom and dad and they are holding hands.

Mom came from a poor family. My dad's dad was a hunger games victor, so he had plenty to eat. But when he died, he couldn't live in the victor's village no more. So he took the money he had left and opened up a butcher shop. He met mom when she was looking for a job to provide for her family. They got married and had us.

I'm named after mom's sister who died in the hunger games and Librae is named after dad's mom.

Before I know it were already home. Mom fixes us some beef stew and we sit at the table and talk. Mom and dad gives us the talk that she usually gives me the day before the reaping. We talk about what happens if we do get picked and that they love us no matter what.

They give us a hug and sends us to bed.

I lay down in bed and stare at the ceiling for a while.

"Wren", Librae says.

"Yeah?"

"Promise me something."

"What", I ask.

"If I get picked, you can't volunteer."

"No."

"Why not", she raises her voice.

"I'm not gonna let you die", I snap

"So you would want me to live a life without a sister", she chokes.

"Librae just let it go your not going to get picked."

"Whatever."

I don't hear her make another sound after that.
